B29 Superfortress

File Description:
The Boeing B-29 was designed in 1940 as an eventual replacement for the B-17 and B-24. The first one built made its maiden flight on September 21, 1942. In December 1943 it was decided not to use the B-29 in the European Theater, thereby permitting the airplane to be sent to the Pacific area where its great range made it particularly suited for the long over-water flight required to attack the Japanese homeland from bases in China. During the last two months of 1944, B-29s began operating against Japan from the islands of Saipan, Guam and Tinian. With the advent of the conflict in Korea in June 1950, the B-29 was once again thrust into battle. For the next several years it was effectively used for attacking targets in North Korea. The B-29, named Enola Gay is the airplane from which the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August, 1945. SPECIFICATIONS Span: 141 ft. 3 in. Length: 99 ft. 0 in. Height: 27 ft. 9 in. F100 Super Sabre

File Description:
F100 Super Sabre v1.0 for x-plane 6.4-6.6 - Developed as a follow-on to the F86 used in the Korean War, the F-100 was the world's first production airplane capable of flying faster than the speed of sound in level flight (760 mph). Of the 2,294 F-100's built before production ended in 1959, 1,274 were -D's, more than all the other series combined. The -D, which made its first flight on Jan. 24, 1956, was the most advanced production version. Its features included the first autopilot designed for a supersonic jet and a low-altitude bombing system. The Super Sabre had its combat debut in Vietnam where it was used extensively as a fighter-bomber in ground-support missions such as attacking bridges, road junctions, and troop concentrations.

F/A18 Hornet

File Description:
The F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather aircraft used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. It was designed to replace both the A-7 Corsair in the light ground attack role, and the F-4 Phantom which operated in both the air defense and ground attack roles.  It compliments the F-14 Tomcat and can be operated from forward airstrips for the U.S. Marine Corps. In the fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense; in the attack mode, it is used for force projection, interdiction and close and deep air support. The F/A-18 currently equips the majority of Navy and Marine fighter-attack squadrons and will ultimately replace the F-14 Tomcat as it has the F-4 Phantom, the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II. The Blue Angels flight demonstration team has used the F/A-18 since 1987.  The final Hornet to be built was rolled out of Boeing's facility at Patuxent River, Maryland, in August 2000. Over 1,400 Hornets were built and over 1,200 are now flying in fifty-five active duty, reserve and test squadrons, as well as in seven foreign countries.

B17 Flying Fortress

File Description:
The B17 is arguably the best known heavy bomber from WWII. Followed closely by it's direct successor the B29 SuperFortress it symbolizes the best of WWII's heavy Bombers. The B17 was one of the planes that barely made it into the war. In 1934 the then very small Boeing company had a prototype four engined bomber design called the B-299 but it had not been ordered by the US military. It had suffered several serious setbacks in it's design competition including a crash during a fly-off. Boeing continued work the plane and eventually secured a small service test order and the troubled early history of the bomber began. The B17 and bombers like it were planes created as "strategic bombers". The essential idea was that a strategic bomber should be able to carry a very large payload for long distances. The military had come to the realization that bombing technology was by nature imprecise even with new advances like the American Norden sight, and what was required was a large number of bombs delivered by large number of planes to assure that a target was destroyed. Although the Germans actually had a decent "smart bomb" and the British built specialty bombs, neither was reliable, so it seemed the best idea was just to blanket the target with bombs. An American extension to this concept was that of a self-defended bomber. Bombers could be built so tough and with so much defensive armament, it was thought, that they could simply fly to the target, drop bombs, and if necessary fight their way through fighters to get home. There would be security in the large number of bombers in formations, and the defensive capability would allow bombers to fly during the day for better accuracy in drops. It was to this design concept the B17 was built. Early experiences in the war with B17's and B-24's could only be termed as disastrous. Loss rates of up to 25% showed the concept of unescorted bombers in daytime to be entirely wrong. Escort fighters were a necessity for success. It soon became apparent that with fighter cover the B17 really was an unparalleled strategic bomber. Success for the B17 shot up dramatically, and it's initial design specifications of huge amounts of armor and gunner positions served it well when fighters did make it close in. The Fortress had enough strength to stave off attackers until escorts showed up, and it became legendary for the incredible punishment it could take and still make it home. B25 Mitchell Bomber

File Description:
B25 Mitchell for X-Plane 6.40-6.6 Made famous by the Doolittle raid on Tokyo shortly after Pearl Harbour the B25 Mitchell bomber is the most famous medium bomber of WWII and perhaps of all time. The B25 was the most numerous twin engine aircraft built by the US during WWII; estimates of production vary from 9300 to 11000 built. On April 18, 1942 Doolittle led sixteen B-25 aircraft from the navy carrier, U.S.S. Hornet to bomb Japan in retaliation for that country's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although little damage was done and all planes were lost the raid proved to be one of the most famous missions of the war. The B25 was powered by a pair of 1,700 hp Wright R-2600-29 "Cyclone" 14 cylinder, air-cooled engines. Maximum speed was 272 mph at 15,000 ft, with a ceiling of 24,000 ft and a range of 1350 miles with a full load of bombs. Armament varied considerably in the B25 depending on the type of mission the plane was designed for. Heavenly Body is a B25J designed as a bomber, so it carried eleven 0.50 caliber machine guns; two in the top turret, two in the tail, one in the nose, two in cheek packs on each side under the pilot and one in each waste window. The top, nose and cheek pack guns could also be used in strafing, if so desired. This version carried 3,000 lbs of bombs (usually six 500 pounders) in an interior bomb bay. The X-Plane version is a fairly faithful rendition of the B25. The body consists of two sections consisting of the fuselage and a fuel tank. The main engine nacelles actually consist of two nacelles, one is the 1700 HP engine, the rear section is a 5 lb thrust rocket. Engine nacelles are also used for the two rudders in order to get the correct shape. Vertical stabilizers with rudders are buried within the nacelles. Decoration of the plane is complicated by the use of multiple nacelles but the resulting compromise is acceptable though not an authentic replica.

F4U Corsair

File Description:
F4U Corsair for x-plane 6.4 to 6.6 - With its huge propeller (13'-4" diameter) and 2000 + HP engine it requires a lot of skill to just get this bird into the air. The torque on the plane is so high that a fair amount of left stick is required to keep the plane from rolling on takeoff. To handle all of this horsepower and keep the landing gear as short as possible the solution was to "crank" the wing giving the corsair its unique appearance. Visibility during takeoff and landings is terrible due to the long nose. Carrier landings have to be made by turning into the landing alignment. The plane is decorated in the skin of 86 where "Pappy" Boyington of the Black Sheep squadron was photographed before his last mission. In the Pacific pilots did not fly any specific plane as they did in the European theater but flew whatever was ready to go. If you look very closely you older simmers may recognize Robert Conrad who played Pappy Boyington in the TV series about the Black Sheep.

B36J Peacemaker for X-Plane 6.4-6.6

File Description:
B36 Jv1.1 Peacemaker for X-Plane 6.4-6.6 - Upgraded panel but still not custom; J version with 3800 HP engines. The B36 Peacemaker was the last propeller driven bomber put into service by the US. With 6 - 3800 Hp radial engines and a gross takeoff weight of 410,000 lbs the early versions like the A and B variant were woefully underpowered. This file is the later J version with 4 - 5200 lb static thrust jet engines added. Never called into active service the B36 provided the US long range nuclear determent until the jet B52 came into service. The B36 is a huge airplane with a large payload capacity, 10000 mile range and long endurance. See the read me file for distribution and copyright information.
