Tips and Tricks Number 23 - Sept. 2006 Issue. After an all too brief Summer Vacation, Tips and Tricks is back with a wide assortment of helpful information and ideas. This issue includes an important warning for anyone who may try the FSX Demo from Microsoft. The "From the E-mail Bag Department" answers several interesting questions and you will find an extensive review of the Kai Tak (Hong Kong) airport circa 1998. Rounding out this issue are links to several fine websites, reviews of scenery, aircraft and utilities plus a surprise or two has been thrown in for good measure. Hopefully you will find something of value whether you are a newbie or long time simmer. An updated index by John Burford for the entire series is included. Please unzip (using folders option) to a temporary folder. Compiled in pdf format for your flying enjoyment.

| Salluit CYZG in Hudson Strait, Quebec, Canada |

File Description:
Salluit is a village of 1,250 or so inhabitants at N 62 W 75 40 on the shore of Sugluk Inlet, which is off Hudson Strait. It's name means "Skinny Ones" in Inuit, and refers to a time when there was not enough to eat, which is a rather scary reminder of just how fragile Inuit survival used to be. The village does not feature in FS9 but is included in this scenery with approximately the right shape and with the roads that lead to the airfield and what I presume are quarries for building materials and roads. The airfield runway is 3,510 feet of gravel 100 feet wide and is some 740 feet higher than the village on the shoreline. I added the roads, the quarries, a new airfield background, plus of course there is the scenery file and the AFCAD and AI.

File Description:
Adak is near the western end of the Aleutian chain of islands in Alaska. The closed naval air base buildings are mostly still there and once housed over 6,000; the population is now much reduced to around 320, involved in fishing and a fish processing plant, organising caribou hunts for the tourism industry, running the airport, etc. The runways are long and wide (both are over 7,000 feet) and aligned 23-05 (with an ils) and 18-36. There are flights from Anchorage on Thursdays and Sundays by Alaska Airlines (a 737) and occasional charters from Dutch Harbor by Grant Aviation, 445 miles east of Adak. The Ai included here contains these flights. There are revisions included for Dutch Harbor PADU which provide parking for more Grant planes, as Grant are now also running flights to Akun Island, east of Dutch Harbor; more Aleutian posts to follow.

| Hat Island CWHI in Nunavut, Canada |

File Description:
This was a DEW line I Station on Hat Island; the island is around 4 miles square and just under 50 miles southeast of Jenny Lind Island. The station was closed in 1963 and has now been totally dismantled and removed, a fairly easy task given the size. The runway is still there and is a shade over 3,000 feet of gravel 100' wide. There are no lights, signage, or windsock. A North Warning System station was built in 1991 on the site of the I Station, just north of the runway. Most of these DEW line stations are not particularly impressive or even interesting. However, you can bet that any pilot flying regularly in the north along the coast knows where all these runways are, in case one of them suddenly becomes his favourite in the whole world just after the sudden silence.

| Caterpillar Summer 2018 Multi-Week Flightplan |

Summer 2018 multi-week flightplans for Caterpillar's corporate jets, based out of Peoria, Illinois. New research done by the Alpha India Group has determined that multi-week AI flightplans are possible in FSX and P3D. This allows a wide variety of destinations to be included in corporate and charter flightplans. For more information on multi-week flightplans, please visit the Alpha India Group forums, specifically the AIG Announcements section. Please install with AIG Traffic Tools (link to that is included in the README) or the latest release of AI Flight Planner. This flightplan is for FSX and P3D only. Tok Junction is a village, or small town, on the Alaska Highway some 180 miles east of Fairbanks and 60 miles west of the Alaska-Canada border. The town is spread over a wide area on the flat terrain and barely registers among the trees, and as such is not shown in FS9 except as a grid of roads as there is no town terrain texture like it used in FS9. The airfield is at the eastern end of the town and adjacent to the Alaska Highway and I have included some surrounding houses, workshops, shops, lodges, etc. The single runway is 3,000 feet of 50 feet wide asphalt aligned 07-25 and lit. There is a small airline based on the airfield called 40-Mile Air. Their hangar is red and the name written large and 100LL fuel is available beside it at all times. Jet A-1 is available by a telephoned pre-arangement. They are, I believe, no longer flying scheduled flights but they do still function as an air taxi and they have a contract to deliver mail to surrounding villages that are not served by all-weather roads. The airfield now has a new icao "PFTO" but in FS9 it remains as the original FAA LID, 6K8. The FS9 roads are not accurately placed, and the grass airfield background is not really appropriate as the reality is more like gravel mixed with earth; it is however difficult to replicate this with the available textures and still prevent bushes or trees appearing. But, in the winter and with snow on the ground it looks as it should. A note here about my scenery making. There will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I either took or found for scenery purposes, plus I expect to move on from FS9 at some point during next year.

Anticosti Island is in the Gulf of St Lawrence, around 25 miles off the Quebec mainland coast. It is some 40 miles wide and 130 miles long on an east west axis. There are few urban areas and only one that can be described as a small town, namely Port Menier at the western end of the southern coast, with a population of under 1,000. There is a ferry service to the harbour. The airport, Port Menier CYPN, is around 3 miles northeast of the town, with an asphalt runway aligned 11-28, 4,875 feet long and 150 feet wide with PAPI at each end. In 2010 (the approximate date of this scenery) a gravel runway was still visible at the eastern end of the field. This was no longer in use by 2010, except perhaps by small planes on skis in the winter. The island, with its small population, small urban area, and no industry other than logging, has as a result a mainly undisturbed wildlife population. This has made deer hunting and fishing the main tourist activities, with one company (called Safari) having an exclusive licence to exploit large areas of mountains and rivers. Planeloads of hunters and fishermen are flown in on chartered Nolinor Aviation planes from the south. There are a further two airfields in the eastern end of the island, and in 2010 Rivere-Aux-Saumons CTH7 had a 5,500 feet gravel runway, linked by road to a lodge area at the mouth of the river. This is the only lodge area that I have been able to locate, but there are others. To the south Riviere Bell CRB5 had at that time a gravel runway that was 3,000 feet long. The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is Airbus’ response to market demand for a medium capacity long range wide-body family. Designed with airlines’ priorities in mind, the A350 XWB confronts the challenges of high fuel prices, rising passenger expectations and increasing environmental concerns.
Available from 2013, it has an entirely new, uncompromising, 21st Century design with a wider and taller fuselage for extra space and passenger comfort. A complete family of airliners sized to generate cost reductions and provide unprecedented operating flexibility for airlines; three basic passenger versions are being offered. With a range of up to 8,300nm/15,380km they include the A350-800 for 270 passengers in a spacious three-class configuration; the A350-900 for 314 passengers and the A350-1000 seating 350 passengers. An ultra long-range version, the A350–900R, will fly even further while a freighter version, the A350–900F, will complement the passenger models.
As befits the most advanced aircraft family in its segment, the A350 XWB is able to provide greater economy on long-range markets and is equally attractive as a route opener or as part of a multi-type Airbus fleet offering optimized network solutions. Thanks to the application of the latest innovations, the A350 XWB is able to offer 20 per cent lower cash operating costs per seat than competing aircraft in this size category and fuel efficiency improvements of up to 25 per cent per seat. The fly-by-wire A350 XWB Family is a significant addition to the Airbus product range. A member of the Airbus FBW Family of aircraft, it benefits from the same operational commonality as the other members of the Family. This handling and flight deck commonality allows airlines to benefit from the unique Airbus Family concept of cross crew qualification and mixed fleet flying, and will ensure smooth introduction into service.
