Images related to this file:
File Description:
Wolf Lake 4AK6 is in Alaska, some 10 miles northeast of Wasilla, on the north side of Knik Arm. It is an airpark, with houses and hangars adjacent to a runway that is 3,800 feet of asphalt aligned 06-24. The runway is lit but the taxiways are not. There is a second runway that is around 2,500 feet long and aligned 36-18, which is grass and unlit. The C-130 is permanently parked, and seeing it land would have been interesting.

File Description:
Anderson Lake 0AK1 is in Alaska, less than 2 miles southwest of Wolf Lake, on the north side of Knik Arm. It is , like Wolf Lake, an airpark, with houses and hangars adjacent to a single runway that is 2,200 feet of asphalt aligned 08-26. The runway is lit but the taxiways are not. There are hangars and aprons at the western end that are not "attached" to houses, with an adjacent strip mall. There is also a smaller apron at the eastern end. In the first screenshot Anderson Lake is in the foreground (at the eastern end of the lake of the same name) with Wolf Lake visible behind it.

| Talkeetna Village AK44 in Alaska, REVISED |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
The town of Talkeetna is around 75 miles north of Anchorage in Alaska, on the east shore of the Susitna River where the Susitna, Talkeetna, and Chulitna rivers join. The town is where Don Sheldon started Talkeetna Air Services. His story is told in "Wager With The Wind" by James Greinar and is well worth reading for the descriptions of mountain flying. There are two airfields at Talkeetna, PATK with its long asphalt runway and Talkeetna Village AK44 in the town. This is AK44; measuring the space left for the runway between the river bank in the south and the curve in the road that marks the north end of the field there is just enough space for the 900 feet of runway that is described in the book. The result is a step back in time to 1973, when the second hangar was built. Neither hangar has survived to today.

Images related to this file:
File Description:
Sand Point is in the eastern third of the Aleutian chain of islands in Alaska, around 85 miles east of Cold Bay on Popof Island. The town has a population of around 1,000 and it's economy is solidly based on fishing. There is, in the town, a fish processing plant owned by Trident (their largest plant is in Akutan, east of Dutch Harbor) and the area close to the airport is used for crab pot storage etc. The single runway is aligned 13-31 (with right hand circuits on 13) and 6,000 feet long. There are scheduled flights by Grant Aviation to neighbouring local airfields and flights to and from Anchorage by Peninsula Air (included in the AI posted with Adak). The Coastguard also make occasional visits.

| Alaska South Slope 4; Selawik PASK |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
There are four main northwestern Alaska towns which are serviced by Alaska Airlines, and from which local flights spread out. The northernmost is Barrow. Southwest of Barrow is Kotzebue, then Nome, and the furthest south is Bethel. This series is for the flights from and around Kotzebue, mostly on the South Slope of the Brooks Range of mountains. There will be further additions. Selawik is a village (population now around 760) around 75 miles east of Kotzebue on three of the delta islands of the Selawik River where it flows into Selawik Lake. The delta forms part of the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge for migratory birds. The airfield is just next to the village, with two runways, 3,450 feet of lit gravel aligned 03-21 and 3,100 feet of gravel aligned 09-27. There are scheduled flights by Era (now renamed Ravn) and by Bering Air, both of them originating in Kotzebue and routing east to Noorvik, Kiana, Selawik, etc, and then back again. The AI includes these flights along with Everts Air and GA.

File Description:
There are four main northwestern Alaska towns which are serviced by Alaska Airlines, and from which local flights spread out. The northernmost is Barrow. Southwest of Barrow is Kotzebue, then Nome, and the furthest south is Bethel (not yet made). This is the first in a series for flights from Nome, and it is Shishmaref, 125 miles north of Nome on the far side of the Seward Peninsula.
Shishmaref is a village on one of a string of islands off the northern shore of the Seward Peninsula, with a population of around 560. Like other similarly-sited villages (Kivalina, for instance) it is feeling the effects of coastal erosion and there are plans for a relocation, eventually. The airfield is just beside the village, with a runway of just under 5,000 feet of lit asphalt aligned 05-23, with PAPI on both ends. There are scheduled flights by Era (now renamed Ravn) and by Bering Air, both of them originating in Nome.

This is the fifth in a series for local flights from Nome, and it is on the coast around 55 miles east of Wales and 55 miles northwest of Nome. There are two other airfields around a large lagoon that is almost totally enclosed from the sea, and Teller is on the easten shore, just 15 miles east of Port Clarence and 5 miles southeast of Brevig Mission, both already posted. Teller has a populaton of around 230, down from the 5,000 or so in the early 1900's after the Bluestone Placer Mine struck gold. Tollef Brevik was a Lutheran missionary who was both a pastor and teacher for the Inuit in the area from 1894 onward, travelling from community to community but based in Teller, where the Teller Mission Church was later renamed the Brevig Mission. The name was later appropriated and used for the curent village of that name; he was surely very well regarded by the local population. Unusually, it is possible to drive from Nome to Teller in summer, on a dirt road. Conversely, the road that shows in FS9 to the north towards Brevig Mission (courtesy of Ultimate Terrain) does not in fact exist except in winter, when it is estabished on the snow by the tyre tracks of users. The airstrip is southeast and 2 miles by road from the main part of the village on the spit, with a gravel runway 02-25 which is 3,500 feet of gravel. The AI is the usual for this area, Bering and ERA with some GA and cargo by Everts.
