File Description:
Royal Aviation Canada textures for Dee Waldron's AI Lockheed L1011 TriStar package, available here on AVSIM.
Excellent lo-poly model for traffic use, or even a little flying around. Model by Dee Waldron,
paint kit by Henry Tomkiewicz. This package just replaces the corrupted package due to the AVSIM hack. Nothing has changed.

| Teslin CYZW in the Yukon, Canada |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Teslin is a village on the Alaska Highway around 85 miles east of Whitehorse, on the banks of the very long Teslin Lake and where there is a sizeable bridge across an offshoot of the lake. The Hudson Bay trading company established a post there in 1903. The current population is a rather meagre 120 or so and the only reason I am making this scenery is that I know one of the 120. This scenery, in addition to the terrain, village, bridge, and airport items also modifies the Alaska Highway. The AI includes a school excursion trip on a chartered Air North Hawker Siddeley 748 on Saturday. There are no scheduled flights to the field. The runway is now around 5,600 feet of gravel aligned 08-26 and with VASI at both ends. It is lit with runway lighting on the tops of traffic cones, and you will need to download the lighting library from my earlier postings of either Allakaket Lights or Anaktuvuk Lights earlier this week. A note here about my scenery making. There will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I either took or found for scenery purposes, plus I expect to move on from FS9 at some point during next year.

| CYDA - Dawson City - Yukon Territory, Canada |

File Description:
Dawson City is in the Yukon Territory, Canada, 140 miles south of Old Crow and about the same north of Whitehorse. The town has a population of just over 1,300 and is on the bank of the Yukon River; it is busy with nearby gold mining and tourism. There are regular flights by Air North, the Yukon airline, and I have included them in the AI along with ConAir and GA. Thanks go to Hernan for his Air North textures. The airport is beside the Klondike Highway that links Dawson City to Whitehorse, a few miles southwest of the town and the river. The runway approaches are steeper than most because of the surrounding hills and the Canada Flight Supplement notes that use is restricted to daylight hours, with some exceptions including emergencies. Runway 20 has right hand circuits. The runway is gravel and just over 5,000 feet long, aligned 02-20. There is a second apron for the activities of ConAir etc in the summer fire-fighting months. The "masts" are actually for fire hose drying; the ends of several 50 feet lengths are attached to a circular holder that is then pulled up to the top of the central pole.

| Yellowknife Floats CEN9 - Northwest Territories, Canada |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Yellowknife float base is on the shore of Yellowknife Bay, which is on the north side of Great Slave Lake. The float base is on two sides of Latham Island and the promontory that reaches out to it, which is where the town of Yellowknife was originally founded, and float planes land either in Back Bay (to the west) or in East Bay (guess where?). Where the south end of the island meets the promontory there are two inlets and two companies; Air Tindi in the eastern part and North Airways in the western. These two companies have bespoke buildings. I have used other buildings from other sceneries to model the "feel" of the original Yellowknife and the docks along the shore. One thing I could not do, and that was to recreate at its correct height "the rock", which is the raised centre of the promontory; FS9 resisted terrain readjustments beyond a certain point.

File Description:
This is a very small village in northern Quebec, on the eastern shore of Nunavik in Ungava Bay. The population is only around 200. The name refers to the redness of the iron bearing soil. Kuujuaq, the regional centre, is 90 miles to the south, and there are regularly scheduled flights by an Air Inuit Twin Otter. The runway is 3,400 feet of gravel aligned 05-23. The ai was included with the posting of Akulivik but is included again here.

| CYQS - St Thomas - Ontario, Canada *V1* |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
St Thomas is a town in Ontario around 12 miles south of London and less than 10 miles from the north shore of Lake Erie, with a population of just under 40,000. The airport (actually more of an airfield, as there are no scheduled flights) has three runways typical of an ex-military field, with one remaining hangar from RCAF flight training times in the 1940's, and the east-west runway now extended to just over 5,000 feet. The main presence at CYQS is a company in the crop seeding and spraying business over a wide area of Ontario; as a result there are several AT-802 planes based there which are included here as AI planes and also as parked scenery objects. To the west of the original apron area there are added taxiways to cater for a herd of new individual hangars wearing orange and white uniforms. There is fuel, runway lighting on 09-27, taxiway lights, visitor parking on the edge of the apron, and maintenance companies in the large hangars, plus a flight training group. A small terminal building sits quietly between hangars, waiting. Ditches along the road and around much of the airfield provide separation, which is why the fences are not continuous. I presume that the warning balls on the electricity cables were found to be necessary to persuade pilots not to land there; probably ski planes in winter, they tend to land anywhere so long as it has snow on it. This V1 version includes previous updates.

| Medicine Hat CYXH in Alberta Canada |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Medicine Hat is a town in south Alberta, beside the South Saskatchewan River, and around 180 miles southeast of Calgary. Originally a railroad town, and in fact still served by the railway and now also by the Trans-Canada Highway, it is currently mainly known for the large natural gas fields in the area. As Rudyard Kipling said, Medicine Hat has "all hell for a basement". The name of the city is a translation of the Blackfoot tribal name for the eagle tail feather headdress worn by tribal medicine men, and it was curiosity about the name that first got my attention.
The date of this scenery is not 2010, as is usual for my scenery; it is more like 2015. The terminal building has been extended and improved, the apron around the two large southern hangars and the large rental hangars behind them is still visibly new, and the tie-down parking places on the grass accessed off one side of the old taxiway are in place and in use. The airport is now (2015) not in the busy usage that it experienced in the second half of the 1900's and old taxiways and a runway have been left to decay and large old hangars have been demolished. Hence the visible remains. The current runways were rebuilt (on top of the existing as foundations) and are 03-21 with 4,990 feet of lit asphalt 150 feet wide with PAPI at both ends, and 09-27 with 2,885 feet of lit asphalt 100 feet wide.
The two newish hangars to the south are a helicopter operating and maintenance company with a flight training school based in the adjoining offices (light grey buildings) and an FBO in hangar and offices (dark grey). Further buildings have been erected since then, and some existing ones have been reclad (eg. light grey now, in 2021, has a light blue roof).
I have cheated in one respect. In reality, the edges of the airport have been gradually utilised for various purposes, such as workshops, storage sheds, factories, etc, with access from the surrounding urban roads. As I have almost no information regarding their appearance I decided to leave the airport area as it was originally built, rather than incorporating buildings that I know are false. I admit that this was also the laziest solution.
The scenery includes a grass strip 3 miles to the south of Medicine Hat, namely Schlenker CFZ3. It is the only airfield I have come across where the fences are not around the edge of the airfield, they are instead around the runways and apron. I presume this is so animals can be left to feed off the grass in summer.
The AI includes flights by Air Canada Jazz.

Images related to this file:
File Description:
Kangiqsujuaq is on the north coast of Quebec, 85 miles west of Quaqtaq and 125 miles east of Salluit, while across the Hudson Strait and 100 miles away on Baffin Island is Kimmirut. The town grew around two trading posts, the first opened by Revillon Freres in 1910, and the second by the Hudson Bay Company in 1914. A school was opened in 1960, and a clinic in 1961. The town was known as Wakeham Bay until 1961, and now has a population of around 700. The airport is to the south of the town and up on the hill at 511 feet ASL (this has been remeasured since 2004 and is now known to be 501). The gravel runway is just over 3,500 feet long and aligned 15/33; there is no PAPI, but there is fuel available, both 100LL and JetA. There are flights by Air Inuit.
