HLLM Wheelus Air Base 1955-1962 Download

File Description:
Wheelus AB was a USAF base located in Tripoli Libya until it was closed in 1970. Wheelus served many purposes: as a MATS station; as a Reflex base hosting various bombers for short rotations at different times; and as a gunnery and bombing training facility supporting many United States Air Forces in Europe squadrons which flew in for month long training sessions to practice live gunnery and bomb training exercises at the nearby El-Uotia Gunnery Range. This is also included in the scenery. Separate traffic is provided for 1955, 1957, 1959 and 1962, each schedule reflecting a mix of visiting squadrons and aircraft types. It can get to be a pretty colorful place if you install all those provided for.

RCAF, CC-108 Caribou Download

File Description:
The Caribou was designed as an aerial transport "truck". It was not used by the Royal Canadian Air Force in great numbers, but had success in the export market. Nine were purchased for the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960 for use in Canada's United Nations contribution with 117 ATU. They were also assigned to 102 Composite Unit (KU) and was redesignated to 424 Squadron, at CFB Trenton, shortly after unification. The only loss was to a strafing Pakistan Air Force F-86 while on United Nations duty. In June 1971, the surviving eight were withdrawn and sold to the Tanzanian Air Force. The Caribou was due to have a new serial range beginning with 10801 retaining the last-two digits of the prior serial in 1970. As the type was to be withdrawn by June 1971, this did not take place and the old range of 5303 and 5320 to 5327 was maintained.

Kindley Field Bermuda 1955-1962 Download

File Description:
Kindley Field, on the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, was built as a joint RAF/USAAF facility during the Second World War. Subsequently the RAF area became the civilian terminal while Kindley Air Force Base was operated by the USAF between 1948 and 1970. It was primarily a staging post between the US and Western Europe for land-based planes unable to cross the Atlantic non-stop, very like Ernest Harmon in Newfoundland and the civilian Gander, and like Harmon it closed when the jet age made such bases redundant. Prior to that it hosted no combat units, but the 59th and then 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadrons, the 'Hurricane Hunters', were based there, and also from 1 February 1956 to 15 June 1963 the 303rd ARS Stratotankers were present to support Strategic Air Command and other refueling requirements. After 1970 it became a US Navy facility primarily concerned with tracking Soviet submarines, and was closed at the end of the Cold War. This scenery represents Kindley between 1955 and 1962 and has custom made scenery by Dan French and ai military traffic by Al Von Pingel to add to the downloadable California Classic civilian and MATS traffic available at Tom Gibson's site. Like Harmon and Gander, it was one of the most important airfields of its time.

RAF Burtonwood 1955-1957 Download

File Description:
Burtonwood was for many years the most important air base in the United Kingdom, at least in terms of its size and the amount of traffic which passed through it. Built for the RAF but taken over by the USAAF during the war, it played a major role in that war and then in the US commitment to the protection of Europe during the Cold War. The main east-west runway was extended to 9,000 feet while the others fell out of use, and a new control tower and terminal building opened in 1955. Then disaster struck, when the site began to suffer from mining subsidence. MATS left for Mildenhall in 1958 and by the following year the USAF had gone completely, although Burtonwood continued in use by the US Army until the early 1990s

LFQX Laon-Couvron AB 1955-62 Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
From 1950 to 1967 the USAF set up and maintained bases in France, with the agreement of the French government, as part of its commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Laon AB was one of the ten main air bases which supported both attack and air defence capabilities. Many people do not appreciate the sheer extent of the USAF bases in France at this time and the reasons leading to the USAF departure in 1967. There is a link to a fine article on all this included. This is the second in a series of USAFE bases in France, the first being LFJA Chaumont AB. This scenery and traffic represent Laon Air Base during the years 1955 to 1962. Custom Tower and Hangars by Dan French with Custom aircraft paints by Ken Lawson and DeltaDart. Traffic files and the aircraft and paints needed are provided for 1955 (including the Black Knights B-57 Demonstration Team), 1957, 1959 and 1962.

P-51D Mustang "Frenesi" (N357FG) Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This is a repaint for the payware Warbirdsim P-51D "Mustang Tales" product. This repaint depicts the latest Mustang restoration to emerge from Midwest Aero Restorations, completely stock, which just had its first test flight from Danville, Illinois on January 30th. The aircraft is F-6K 44-12852 (restored as a P-51D), owned/operated by Dan Friedkin/Comanche Fighters, based in Texas. Sold surplus immediately following WWII, registered as NX66111, the aircraft was entered into the 1946 Cleveland Air Races as racer #80 "Full House", but its engine blew and was forced to crash-land. Later, the aircraft was sold to Jack Hardwick in the early 50's and crudely rebuilt, with a jump seat and rudimentary dual controls installed in the back of the cockpit, and would soon be sold onto the Dominican Air Force in 1954, becoming FAD 1900 (#2). The aircraft served with the Dominican AF until it was sold and imported back into the US by Brian O'Farrell in 1984. Made serviceable, the aircraft flew again on the US register as N21023 by 1990, and was sold to Jim Beasley Sr. and later owned/operated by Jim Beasley Jr., of Coatesville, PA (sharing hangar space with their P-51D "Bald Eagle"). During this time the aircraft was painted as "Frenesi", the personal mount of WWII 357th Fighter Group ace Gen. Tommy Hayes (the name inspired from a 1940 Artie Shaw tune). By the early 2000's, showing the effects of poor-quality work done on repairing/restoring the aircraft in the past, a complete rebuild of the airframe began. By 2009, the project was sold to Dan Friedkin, now registered as N357FG, and the restoration was continued at Midwest Aero Restorations, known for their award-winning authentic Mustang rebuilds. The aircraft has now emerged in early 2017, resplendent and flying again in the markings of "Frenesi".
