Consolidated PBY-5A (C-FCRR)

File Description: This folder contains a repaint for the Aerosoft PBY Catalina for FSX. It is shown here as C-FCRR, with Air France colors. Built by Boeing of Canada at Vancouver, it became RCAF Canso 9767 on March 4, 1943, and was allocated to Squadron 162, coded S, at Reykjavik, Iceland. In 1944, piloted by Flying Officers Thomas Charles Cooke and Eric Walter Wiskin, 9767 sank the German U-boat U-342 off the coast of Iceland on April 17. The amphibian was removed from the military service on April 1, 1946. The same year it was sold to Canadian Pacific Airlines, registered CF-CRR and assigned fleet number 233 (later 933), it was operated until 1959, thereafter by Northland Airlines (1960-1968), Midwest Airlines (1969-1970), and Ilford Riverton until 1973. The registration was changed to C-FCRR when Avalon Aviation acquired it as a water bomber in 1977, listed as Tanker number 791. In 1995 the aircraft was bought by Powell Eorp. Of Parry Sound, Ontario, subsequently it was owned by the Canadian Air Legend. The French pilot Franklin Devaux bought C-FCRR in 1995 and converted it to a flying television studio, it was based at Le Bourget, Paris, France. During 1996 C-FCRR was the star of monthly French television programme Operation Okavango, while in September 1998 it was the eye catcher of the three-week Champs-Elysees (Paris) static air show. The following October the aircraft started an 8,078 mls (13,000 km) trip to Chile via Dakar (Senegal) and Natal (Brazil) to commemorate early Air France South Atlantic mail service, returning to France in June 1999. On January 19, 2002 the aircraft was stored at Orly Airport, Paris, and has not flown since. Its Canadian registration was cancelled on October 7, 2005. I have painted it in the colors of an aircraft of the Free French Squadron VFP-1 (6 FE), based in Agadir, French Marocco, 1943-1944. Lack of suitable photos means this paint is not 100% accurate. Consolidated PBY-5A (G-PBYA)

File Description: A repaint for the Aerosoft PBY-5 Catalina in the colors of G-PBYA, originally ordered for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Canso A amphibian, basically equivalent to the US Navy PBY-5A. It was built by Canadian Vickers at Cartierville, Quebec and was allocated their constructors number CV-283 before adopting the RCAF serial 11005. It was taken on charge by the air force on 27 October 1943 and initially saw service with 9 (Bomber Reconnaissance) Squadron at Bella Bella on the British Columbia coast between Vancouver and Prince Rupert. It was on their inventory from November to the following August. 9 Squadron had been based at Bella Bella for some time prior to the arrival of Cansos, having operated Supermarine Stranraers there. The Cansos were mainly operated from water despite their amphibious undercarriages and were used on day and night patrols, looking out for enemy submarines. By mid-1944, the threat of a Japanese invasion of Western Canada had receded and it was decided to disband 9 Squadron and close the station at Bella Bella. The Cansos, including 11005, were flown to Alliford Bay in the Queen Charlotte Islands, also in British Columbia, and transferred to 7 (BR) Squadron in August. The job was the same – anti-submarine patrols mostly – and 11005 remained with 7 Sqn until it too was disbanded on 25 July 1945. After a post-war career as transport and waterbomber, it was acquired by Plane Sailing in 2004, restored and repainted as a OA-10A of the USAAF. It is based in Duxford. Qantas Consolidated PBY-5 5 paints

File Description: Five repaints for the Aerosoft PBY-5 Catalina in the colors of PBY-5's operated by Qantas on the 'Double Sunrise Service' between Western Australia and Ceylon between 1943 and 1945. In 1943, Royal Australian Air Force personnel were seconded to operate Catalinas under the banner of Qantas. The plan called for flights between Perth, Western Australia, and RAF Base Koggala in southern Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The flights were the longest non-stop air route of any airline, over 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km) across the Indian Ocean. Navigating without the aid of radio, the crews relied solely on rudimentary navigation by compass and stars during the trip. Only Catalinas had that kind of range, so five PBY-5 flying boats were converted to make them suitable for the trip. They received camouflage paint, with a RAAF roundel on the fuselage, but also a civilian registration, since they were officialy operated by Qantas, and they were named after the stars they would be using for navigation: Vega Star (G-AGFL/FP221 - tail code 1) Altair Star (G-AGFM/FP244 - tail code 2) Rigel Star (G-AGID/JX575 - tail code 3) Antares Star (G-AGIE/JX577 - tail code 4) Spica Star (G-AGKS/JX287 - tail code 5) Taking between 27 and 33 hours, with departure timed so that the flight crossed Japanese occupied territory during darkness, the crews would observe the sunrise twice, which led to the service being known as "The Double Sunrise". The flight route flown was along the coast from Perth to Exmouth then setting out towards Cocos (Keeling) Island or Christmas Island (though neither was actually sighted during the flight) and onto Kogalla, a journey of approximately 3,580 nautical miles (6,630 km). After the success of the initial flights, it was decided to run a weekly service, with some services flying over Rottnest Island and then taking a direct line to Kogalla. As part of the Australia-England air route there was a surface component from Kogalla to Karachi that added considerable time to the service. This was later replaced by the Double Sunrise service, with Karachi to England flown by BOAC. Air crews would change in Kogalla taking the next plane in either direction minimising the time taken to complete the journey. Though stripped of all non-essential equipment, including de-icing equipment and insulation, the average takeoff weight was 15,900 to 16,000 kg; this included 9,040 liters of fuel, which gave the Catalina a range of 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). The service made 271 crossings, delivered over 4,500 kg of mail and carried 860 passengers, including among them British MP Edith Summerskill and the journalist Keith Murdoch. 'The Secret Order of The Double Sunrise' was an illustrated certificate given to passengers aboard the flying boats of the Australia-England air link, to attest they had been airborne for more than 24 hours. Consolidated PBY-5A 44-33939 4th ARS

File Description: This folder contains a repaint for the Aerosoft PBY Catalina for FSX, representing OA-10a 44-33939, a USAF search and rescue aircraft of the 4th ARS, Hamilton AFB, California, that carried not only the yellow high visibility markings, but also a red tail and wingtips, for operations in the Arctic. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom, based on the repaint kit by Aerosoft. Though the original aircraft carried a radome above the cockpit, it was not equiapped with the large exhausts of the updated Aerosoft model. I've included textures for the large exhausts, but also the earlier model with the small exhausts and the appropriate textures.

Consolidated PBY-5A Swedish Air Force #47002

File Description: This folder contains a repaint for the Aerosoft PBY Catalina. Represented is #47002, one of three PBY5A Canso's that were purchased by the Swedish Air Force in 1947. #47002 was involved in the 'Catalina Affair' in 1952. On 16 june 1952, it was on a search and rescue mission between Gotland and Estonia, looking for a DC-3 that had disappeared three days earlier, when it was attacked and shot down by a Russian Mig-15. The russians claimed the (unarmed) Catalina had fired first. Only in recent years did the russians admit they were responsible for this incident, as well as for shooting down the DC-3. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom, based on the Aerosoft paintkit.

Consolidated PBY-5 RNZAF 6 Sqn XX-N

File Description: A repaint for the Aerosoft PBY-5 Catalina in the colors of PBY-5 (Bu08450) NZ4012 XX-N 'The Naughty Nine" of the RNZAF, as it looked while flying with FltLt Guy Rogers and crew from the Solomon Islands in 1945 with 6 Flying Boat Squadron. Following Japan's entry into the war in December 1941, the RNZAF had to switch from primarily training pilots to Europe into a combat force. No. 6 Squadron RNZAF was formed as an army co-operation unit at Milson in February 1942 flying Vickers Vildebeest and Hawker Hind aircraft. At the same time, No. 5 Squadron RNZAF moved to Fiji with Short Singapores and Vickers Vildebeest and Vincent biplanes. Modern maritime patrol flying boats (and more Hudson light bombers) were requested under Lend Lease and when the first Consolidated Catalinas arrived a detachment of men from No. 5 Squadron was assigned to convert to these types as No. 6 Squadron. Before the squadron was officially formed these men successfully completed their first air-sea rescue of a downed US aircrew. From May 1943 No. 6 squadron undertook action against the Japanese. The Squadron also conducted search and rescue missions for allied aircrew and seamen, and undertook many open sea rescues. XX-N arrived in Fiji on 20 june 1943. On February 18, 1944 it took off on a dumbo rescue mission to north Buka Island and landed to rescue two crew members and pick up a dead body from the crash of B-25, and successfully returned them to Halavo. On 26 May 1945, it stalled on landing at Hobsonville and was towed to its mooring by a crash boat. The induced damage resulted in the aircraft being written off charge on 18 June 1945. Consolidated PBY-5 Dutch Naval Air Service Y-45

Images related to this file:

File Description: This folder contains a repaint for the Aerosoft PBY Catalina for FSX, representing Y-45 of the Royal Dutch Naval Air Force (MLD). On 21 february 1942, Y-45 rescued 27 people from a life boat of the SS "Sloet van Beele". The rescued sailors told that was another life boat containing 80 people, so after dropping off its first load, the Y-45, flown by Mans Dorre, took off again. After searching for hours, the life boat was found, containing 79 sailors. All were stowed on board the PBY, and returned to safety, although some of them later died of exhaustion. In all, 230 people were saved that day, from the "Sloet van Beele" and the destroyer "van Nes". The Y-45 later escaped to Australia, where it served for most of the war, after which it was scrapped.
