This airfield is in the mountains of Idaho, the first in a series. There are not many mountain airfields that can be succesfully modelled in FS9 because the FS9 terrain does not always match reality; no creek for instance, or the valley too small. There are others where the grass strip is all there is, so there is nothing to model apart from resizing the cleared area. Some are well known, well maintained, have clean shower facilities, and are well used for a weekend by small planes with two people and a tent on board, for instance Johnson Creek. Others are less well known but still in good condition, such as Dixie or Big Creek. And there are also some with cabin rental facilities, such as Sulphur Creek Ranch. Other names come to mind, such as Flying B and Pistol Creek, but unfortunately for one reason or another these could not be made. The other difficulty involving hills is succesful AI landings and take offs. At Johnson Creek, for instance, the wind should be from the south to make AI landings more likely to succeed. Dixie is south of the village of the same name, and not to be confused with the dirt strip that is just beside the village. The runway is at 5,148 feet ASL, just over 4,000 feet long and aligned 18-36, and the parking area is at the northern end, opposite the Forest Service buildings. There is a chart of the area included, and to the south of Dixie is the next in the series, Big Creek U60.

Norman Wells is the last of a series of airfields that are along (or close to) the Mackenzie River and in the Northwest Territories. It is 290 miles southeast of Inuvik and just 40 miles northwest of Tulita. The town growth was accelerated by the discovery of oil in the 1930's and the building of a small refinery in 1937, which is included here; there are now around 840 folks living in the town. The airport is adjacent to the town and has just under 6,000 feet of asphalt runway. North Wright Airways is headquartered there and this is reflected in the AI, which is for all of the newly-posted Mackenzie River postings. There is also helicopter AI, Canadian North, First Air, and there are GA flights. There is a mandatory frequency and the Norman Wells tower is manned 24 hours a day so you will follow atc instructions. In real life the terminal is on two levels; this steep change in terrain level is not possible to achieve in FS9 so although I made it as a two level terminal (ready for the FSX version?) it is here modified into a single level building. There are several "taxiways" which lead to the runway but are without hold short markings. These have been shown but are not included as AI routes. The helicopters presumably hover-taxi to the runway across grass (and snow) in real life; the AI helicopter will taxi on wheels. Note that at mixed-use airports planes and helicopters all follow the same rules of procedure.

Fort Simpson Island is the fifth in a series of airfields that follow (approximately) in a southward direction the Mackenzie River. At the far northern end of the river there is Tuktoyaktuk, then Inuvik, Fort McPherson, Fort Good Hope, Deline, and then Wrigley, all posted. Fort Simpson Island is at 405 feet asl and on the west bank of the the Mackenzie, around 110 miles south of Wrigley at the junction of the Mackenzie and the Liard rivers. The town of Fort Simpson is on an island, and has a population of 1,250 or so folks. The Hudson Bay trading post was established here in 1822. The airport is right next to the town, and has 3,000 feet of gravel runway, though with a displaced threshold of 1,000 feet at each end (unmarked, on gravel) this is effectively 2,000 feet for landing. The Canada Flight Supplement lists the runway as being 100 feet wide; the gravel is definitely far less and the 100 refers to the width in the winter when you are landing on snow and don't care if there is gravel or grass underneath. There are no scheduled flights as these go to the nearby Fort Simpson CYFS. There is a mandatory radio frequency which is for both CYFS and CET4 and in this case I have set the "tower" to "manned" so you will report position and obey instructions. Runway 13 has right hand circuits. I have modified the Ultimate Terrain route for the Mackenzie Highway so that it remains on the west side of the river and does not wander randomly from one side to the other north of Fort Simpson.

There are four main northwestern Alaska towns which are serviced by Alaska Airlines, and from which local flights spread out. The northernmost is Barrow. Southwest of Barrow is Kotzebue, then Nome, and the furthest south is Bethel (not yet made). This is the third in a series for local flights from Nome, and it is on the coast around 40 miles east of Wales, and 65 miles northwest of Nome. There are two other airfields around a large lagoon that is almost totally enclosed from the sea, and Port Clarence is on the end of the enclosing spit. Port Clarence was, until the LORAN navigation system went out of use, a Coastguard Station that had a LORAN transmitter, with an impressive mast that was 1,350 feet tall. It "was" as the mast was demolished in 2010, after the LORAN systems had been closed down in stages (LORAN-A in 1980 in the US, LORAN-C in 2010). In the meantime the runway had been lengthened to around 8,500 feet, and continued to be used by the Coastguard. Port Clarence has a population of 24, in theory, though presumably the census information refers to Coastguard personnel in the buildings of the LORAN station. The date for this scenery is anytime you like so long as it is before 2010 as the mast is still there. The AI includes Coastguard C-130 Hercules and helicopter flights, plus a weekly fuel delivery by Everts Air Fuel in a fancy colour scheme (Wednesday) and a daily visit by Bering so Coast Guards can go to civilisation in Nome.

St Thomas is a town in Ontario around 12 miles south of London and less than 10 miles from the north shore of Lake Erie, with a population of just under 40,000. The airport (actually more of an airfield, as there are no scheduled flights) has three runways typical of an ex-military field, with one remaining hangar from RCAF flight training times in the 1940's, and the east-west runway now extended to just over 5,000 feet. The main presence at CYQS is a company in the crop seeding and spraying business over a wide area of Ontario; as a result there are several AT-802 planes based there which are included here as AI planes and also as parked scenery objects. To the west of the original apron area there are added taxiways to cater for a herd of new individual hangars wearing orange and white uniforms. There is fuel, runway lighting on 09-27, taxiway lights, visitor parking on the edge of the apron, and maintenance companies in the large hangars, plus a flight training group. A small terminal building sits quietly between hangars, waiting. Ditches along the road and around much of the airfield provide separation, which is why the fences are not continuous. I presume that the warning balls on the electricity cables were found to be necessary to persuade pilots not to land there; probably ski planes in winter, they tend to land anywhere so long as it has snow on it. All four of these depend heavily on fishing but two of them only spring into existance during the salmon catching-and-canning season. Grant Air run scheduled flights to the two permanent settlements, and there are irregular scheduled flights and charters to the others according to demand. Ugashik is a permanent settlement 60 miles northeast of Port Heiden, stretched out along the east bank of the Ugashik River. There are two canneries, one old and collapsing and the other newer and functioning. The population is given as 12, though during the season this increases significantly. The (newer) airfield is at the northern end of the village with a gravel runway 3,500 feet long aligned 06-24. Egegik is the second permanent settlement, 45 miles north of Ugashik and 40 miles southwest of King Salmon, on the east bank of the Egegik River. The town is on a corner of land, with a population of around 110 and two operating canneries. The airport is a mile and a half south of the town with two gravel runways, 12-30 at just under 5,600 feet and 03-21 with 1,500 feet; both are lit. On the other side of the Egegik River are more canneries and two airfields, both of which have two runways but are otherwise entirely without facilities or luxuries such as lights. They are called Bartletts (named for the cannery it serves) and Coffee Point (named for the location). The shacks of the seasonal fishermen are strung out along the coast and a lot of the salmon fishing is by net, laid by a small boat and later pulled ashore for emptying. Only one cannery on the west shore has a docking facility for unloading boat-caught fish.

This "freezes" all lakes and rivers for winter flying and means they can be landed on with skis or wheels; it is meant for low level flying rather than high level jet flights. This edition is complete in itself and now really covers all of Canada and parts of the USA along the border, including large parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana. It is reversible with an "untick" in the FS scenery library. The revision is the addition of frozen sea in the area of Baffin Island (where I and Sid & Pete have recently posted all of the Baffin Island airfields) as I missed this area last time. Sorry about that. I have spent some time making sure that the sea and the inlets along the coast in the south do not get frozen too, and also some of the lakes that are close to the coast and rarely get cold enough to freeze over. The Great Lakes do not usually totally freeze, but this is an either ON or OFF modification and partial freezing cannot be convincingly simulated, so I went for total ice. Along the north shore I went for the peak of the winter with sea ice all the way to the permanent polar cap; this is not totally realistic as there is usually a partially open lead along the coast, but as with the Great Lakes...... It will work without Ultimate Terrain, but as UT is what gets all the lakes and rivers there and in the right place (except in the far north) it is obviously much improved with UT. The pics show Rockcliffe in the winter with the frozen Ottawa River for real and in FS for comparison; without UT the river would not be in the right place.

Glacier Bay v2 is a complete replacement of the default FS2004 landscape and scenery of more than 90,000 square kilometers (36,000 sq miles) of Southeast Alaska and adjacent areas of Yukon and British Columbia. File 1 of 2 (also requires glbayv2b.zip)
Landscape enhancements include high-resolution terrain mesh, detailed shorelines, rivers, lakes, and glaciers, and accurate land cover data with custom seasonal ground textures. Inland water bodies can be made to "freeze over" via an on/off switch. Other landmarks include the settlements of Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Yakutat, Atlin, and Carcross as well as road and railroad networks, cabins, lodges, and lighthouses. We modeled or enhanced 16 main airfields (plus one fictitious airstrip), 20 unlisted airstrips, 16 seaplane bases, and seven heliports. We've also included AI ship traffic in various locations as well as optional flightplans for GA and floatplane AI traffic.
Glacier Bay v2 is fully compatible with other third-party add-ons, including terrain mesh (FSGlobal, FS Genesis, etc.), ground textures (Ground Environment, BEV, FScene, etc.), and landscape enhancements (Ultimate Terrain Canada/Alaska, Misty Fjords, Tongass Fjords, Freight Dogs). A configurator panel (requires .Net Framework!) allows users to set compatibility options and to choose levels of scenery detail. We provide an autoinstaller and detailed documentation with a sectional map of the coverage area and a list of weblinks to real-world information.

Brevoort airstrip and the BAF-3 radar it serves is on Brevoort Island, off one of the southeastern tips of Baffin Island and 140 miles east of Iqaluit. This scenery includes the BAF-3 buildings on the hilltop and those on the airstrip below, plus the roads connecting them and down to the beach landing area on the rocky coast. This scenery is made for the FSGenesis 76m terrain mesh for northern Canada, and there will be a repost of all my northern Canada airfields to suit this; I cannot think now why I never installed this mesh before. The AI reflects the use of civil airlines for resupply and transportation of personnel. Given the terrain the wind should be from the north so that ai lands using the 02 runway. Landing from the north will involve a terrain clash while take off towards the north will not as the climb out clears the hilltop. The video shows the 600 foot cliff at the runway threshold and an Air Tindi plane on the apron. Cartwright CYCA is on the Labrador coast and has been posted by Flight Ontario as part of their Goose Bay and Labrador Regional Airports sceneries. The nearby LAB-6 radar site is included here, connected to CYCA by an extended road. The site uses the same buildings as Brevoort and Saglek (posted recently) and although I have included them here as separate sceneries the contents can be placed in the same folders as Saglek with a saving in duplicated textures. The textures here are more accurate than Saglek so say yes to over-write; a downloader with personal experience of Brevoort noted that in reality they are lighter.
