The Peace River flows east from the Rockies, joining up with the Slave River to empty into Great Slave Lake. The town is on both banks close to a bend, 245 miles northwest of Edmonton. The population is 7,000 and the surrounding area is either farmland or forest and used for winter sports; Peace River hosted the 2004 Alberta Winter Games. The airport is just over 3 miles west of the town. The runway is 5,000 feet of wide asphalt (150 feet) aligned 04/22, lit, and with PAPI. There is a second runway to the south of the main runway, 1,900 feet of grass and aligned 08/26. The apron is to the north of the runway at the eastern end and is large; there is a purpose-built terminal building, plus other hangar buildings along taxiway C that extends westward from the apron. The airport gives the impression that it is under-used; there are no long lines of parked planes waiting for the weekend and few scheduled flights. These are mainly (totally?) by Sunwest Home Aviation, but unfortunately nobody has made the textures for Sunwest and my talents do not run in that direction so I have made believable substitutions. There is also a small but obstinate AI difficulty, described in the notes.

| YCDN Corunna Downs Station and Old Corunna Downs RAAF (Closed) |

File Description:
Corunna Downs heritage listed RAAF Base was a secret airfield located in scrub and spinifex country, about 16 kms south west of Marble Bar, the hottest part of the "The Pilbara" area of Western Australia. Not a very ideal place to have a tent city. Today there are very few reminders of the once busy airfield. One can see some crumbling foundations and half filled post holes. 73 OBU operated the Corunna Downs airfield which comprised two intersecting bitumen runways, now regressed and graded occasionally. One ran approximately north-south, 5,000 feet in length while the other ran approximately east-west, 7,000 feet in length. Both runways were approximately 150 feet wide. A 50 foot wide taxiway linked the northern end of the north-south runway to the western end of the east-west runway. Approximately 20 camouflaged revetments to disperse aircraft to minimise bomb damage were constructed at Corunna Downs. Permission is required for landing and there may be vegetation on the strip if not graded recently. No cones or windsock so be careful. Corunna Downs Homestead is also heritage listed and consists of graded strips and homestead complex. Start points are at the homestead and the RAAF base is to the west. | PASN St Paul Island in Alaska |

This is St Paul Island airport, plus the town and the harbour which has featured alongside Dutch Harbor in the tv series Deadliest Catch.
St Paul is in the Pribilof group of five islands around 250 miles north of Dutch Harbour. The town has a population of less than 600, so a lot smaller than Dutch Harbour and with only one processing plant, Trident.
The Ai includes a PenAir flight, a Coast Guard C-130, and Coast Guard helicopters; sea AI includes a fishing boat and a Coast Guard cutter. The Coast Guard C-130 and helicopter flights are to Dutch Harbor, so both sceneries are required to make it work as it should. The airport has 6,500 feet of 150 feet wide asphalt with 1,000 feet of over-run at each end, aligned 36/18, lit, and with two aprons at the southern end. There is no hangerage except for Coast Guard helicopters. Runway 36 has at its northern end a hill.
In real life the runway slopes up to the north by over 60 feet, but in FS9 it doesn't; hence the change in airport elevation to 80 feet ASL to get the northern end at least partly out of a box canyon. There is fuel available and it is dispensed from a truck, there are no pumps.

| Valdez Pioneer Field PAVD in Alaska |

File Description:
Pioneer Field is in Valdez Alaska, between the mountains to the north and the water of Valdez Arm to the south. It used to cater for a lot of the work for the Alaskan pipline and the nearby terminal and in the middle 1970's it was a very busy place. That is not the case now, and the tower is no longer manned though there is still an average of 35 flights a day and there are 30 planes (and helicopters) based at the field. There are three really odd hangars at the western end of the apron, with each of them having 6 "T" hangars which have been joined in a circle; this is the only place I have ever seen this. The recently resurfaced runway is 6,500 feet of 150 feet wide asphalt aligned 6/24 at 121 feet asl. There is also a wide and heavy duty asphalt and gravel surrounding runoff and base, probably because of drainage problems with water from the mountains. Fuel (both JetA and 100LL) is available from ERA Helicopters at the eastern end of the apron. All of the buildings on the field have been modelled specifically for this scenery, plus the nearby accomodation blocks. The AI flights are for the twice-daily ERA/Alaska Air flights using a Bombardier Dash 8-200.

The Airbus A380 is a doubledecker, four-engined airliner manufactured by Airbus S.A.S. It first flew on April 27, 2005 from Toulouse, France. Commercial flights should begin in 2006 after 15 months of testing. During much of ist development, the aircraft was known as the Airbus A3XX. The A380 is now the largest passenger airliner, topping the Boeing 747, which was the largest for 35 years. However, the Antonov An-225 retains the record of being the world's largest commercial aircraft. The media has termed the A380 a "superjumbo", with some comparing it to Howard Hughes's Spruce Goose. The first A380 prototype was unveiled during a ceremony in Toulouse, France, on January 18, 2005. Its manufacturer's serial number is 001, and is registered as F-WWOW. The new Airbus will initially be sold in two versions: the A380-800, carrying 555 passengers in a three-class configuration or up to 800 passengers in a single-class economy configuration. Expected range for the -800 model is 8,000 nautical miles (14,800 km). The second model, the A380-800F dedicated freighter, will carry 150 tons of cargo 5,600 miles (10,400 km). Airbus made the cockpit layout, procedures and handling characteristics similar to those of other Airbus aircraft to reduce crew training costs. Kugaaruk is on the coast of northern mainland Canada on the Boothia Peninsula, 60 miles into a deep north-south fjord-like inlet called Pelly Bay. The name was changed from Pelly Bay in 1999, and the population is around 800. Gjoa Haven is 150 miles to the west, and Hall Beach just over 200 miles to the east. Six miles south of the village, and connected by a gravel road, there is a NWS station and what remains of a DEW Auxiliary Site; the DEW site was closed in 1992, a year after the NWS station became operational. There is also a 3,350 feet long gravel runway beside Barrow Lake 2 miles east of the site, Pelly Bay CWPB. Kugaaruk airfield is adjacent to the village and the 5,000 feet of 100 feet wide gravel runway is aligned 049T/229T where T stands for "true" as opposed to magnetic. There are flights by First Air and Canadian North and the AI includes a daily flight of each from Yellowknife via Gjoa Haven (as per real life) plus a cargo visit by Buffalo. Although the runway is long enough to accomodate a 737 it is not licensed for regular scheduled jet flights; the reason for this is that the approach lighting is "inadequate". Included here is a new .bgl for Gjoa Haven which will remove the small hold short line from the gravel; my mistake.
