Colditz Glider

File Description:
Perhaps the most ingenious escape attempt ever planned! The Glider built by WWII Allied prisoners in Colditz Castle. Colditz was Germany's "supermax" for POWs. The launch never took place. The war was nearing its end, and it was decided to postpone what would have been the glider's brief and only flight. On Feb. 2 2000 a replica of the glider was successfully flown in Hampshire England, proving the escape glider could have worked. For this flight model, I plugged in as many of the original specs as I could dig up. It glides remarkably well. The model is deliberately crude, in an attempt to keep the feel of a POW made aircraft. I did include some instrumentation that the POWs would not have had.

B17 Flying Fortress

File Description:
The B17 is arguably the best known heavy bomber from WWII. Followed closely by it's direct successor the B29 SuperFortress it symbolizes the best of WWII's heavy Bombers. The B17 was one of the planes that barely made it into the war. In 1934 the then very small Boeing company had a prototype four engined bomber design called the B-299 but it had not been ordered by the US military. It had suffered several serious setbacks in it's design competition including a crash during a fly-off. Boeing continued work the plane and eventually secured a small service test order and the troubled early history of the bomber began. The B17 and bombers like it were planes created as "strategic bombers". The essential idea was that a strategic bomber should be able to carry a very large payload for long distances. The military had come to the realization that bombing technology was by nature imprecise even with new advances like the American Norden sight, and what was required was a large number of bombs delivered by large number of planes to assure that a target was destroyed. Although the Germans actually had a decent "smart bomb" and the British built specialty bombs, neither was reliable, so it seemed the best idea was just to blanket the target with bombs. An American extension to this concept was that of a self-defended bomber. Bombers could be built so tough and with so much defensive armament, it was thought, that they could simply fly to the target, drop bombs, and if necessary fight their way through fighters to get home. There would be security in the large number of bombers in formations, and the defensive capability would allow bombers to fly during the day for better accuracy in drops. It was to this design concept the B17 was built. Early experiences in the war with B17's and B-24's could only be termed as disastrous. Loss rates of up to 25% showed the concept of unescorted bombers in daytime to be entirely wrong. Escort fighters were a necessity for success. It soon became apparent that with fighter cover the B17 really was an unparalleled strategic bomber. Success for the B17 shot up dramatically, and it's initial design specifications of huge amounts of armor and gunner positions served it well when fighters did make it close in. The Fortress had enough strength to stave off attackers until escorts showed up, and it became legendary for the incredible punishment it could take and still make it home. The F5A Freedom Fighter was originally developed by Northrop as a light, fast, maneuverable and inexpensive fighter. Deliveries began in August 1964 and its various versions have been sold to many countries besides the US, including, Brazil, Canada, Greece, Chile, Honduras, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia and Yemen. Capable of speeds near mach 2 and a combat radius of 875 miles it is one of the most agile military aircraft ever produced.

Black Cat Catalina PBY5/5Av1.1 for x-plane

File Description:
This update includes improvements to the fuselage shape, addition of retractable wing floats using wheel farings, an improved but not custom panel, improved prop efficiency and more. The PBY Catalina is probably the best known flying boat with over 4000 produced by Consolidated aircraft and licensees. The Black Cat squadrons all done in flat black played havoc particularly for the Japanese in the Pacific. Fitted with radar, with a 15 hour endurance and 2800 mile range they hunted Japanese naval ships by night and bombed or torpedoed them by the hundreds up. There are 6 engine nacelles used in the model, 2 represent the 1200 HP radial engines driving the props, the others are jets with 5 lbs of thrust, 1 is used for the rear fuselage section, 1 is used for the wing pylon, 1 is used for the flare from the fuselage to the vertical stabilizer and the last is used for the forward observation and gunner space. Two are not used. Wing sections are taken up by the main wing and the support spars so there you go. The fuel tanks are used for the side gunner pods since these can be decorated separately. The plane flies very well and is stable as a rock. Takeoffs from water are quite easy as long as you don't dip a wing tip (no floats remember). Su-34 (Su-27IB) Fighter Bomber

File Description:
The Su-34 (also known as Su-27IB) fighter bomber has been developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau Joint Stock Company in Moscow and the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association at Novosibirsk in Russia. First deliveries of the fighter bomber are expected to begin in 2005 and it is planned as a replacement for Su-24 and Su-25 aircraft. Su-34 is one of a number of Russian aircraft (Su-27, Su-30, Su-33 and Su-35) which have been given the NATO codename Flanker. The Su-34 fighter bomber is a derivative of the Su-27 fighter aircraft. The aircraft design retains the basic layout and construction of the Su-27 airframe, with a conventional high-wing configuration and a substantial part of the onboard equipment. The Su-34 has a changed contour of the nose section to accommodate an advanced multi-mode phased array radar with terrain following and terrain avoidance modes. It has a two-seat rather than single-seat cockpit. The capacity of the internal fuel tanks has been increased with a resulting increased take-off weight. Changes have been made to the central tail boom for a rear-facing radar. This model of the Su-34 for X-Plane version 6.30 includes two air-to-air missile types, the R-27, and R-73. Once downloaded, install the missiles into your weapons folder.

B25 Mitchell v1.1 for x-plane 6.4/6.51

File Description:
B25 Mitchell v1.1 for X-Plane 6.4/6.51 upgrade from v1.0 includes better handling and improved non-custom panel. Made famous by the Doolittle raid on Tokyo shortly after Pearl Harbour the B25 Mitchell bomber is perhaps the most famous medium bomber of WWII and perhaps of all time. The B25 was the most numerous twin engine aircraft built by the US during WWII estimates of production vary from 9300 to 11000 built. On April 18, 1942 Doolittle led sixteen B-25 aircraft from the navy carrier, U.S.S. Hornet to bomb Japan in retaliation for that country's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although little damage was done and all planes were lost the raid proved to be one of the most famous missions of the war. The B25 was powered by a pair of 1,700 hp Wright R-2600-29 "Cyclone" 14 cylinder, air-cooled engines. Maximum speed was 272 mph at 15,000 ft, with a ceiling of 24,000 ft and a range of 1350 miles with a full load of bombs. Armament varied considerably in the B25 depending on the type of mission the plane was designed for. Heavenly Body is a B25J designed as a bomber, so it carried eleven 0.50 caliber machine guns; two in the top turret, two in the tail, one in the nose, two in cheek packs on each side under the pilot and one in each waste window. The top, nose and cheek pack guns could also be used in strafing, if so desired. This version carried 3,000 lbs of bombs (usually six 500 pounders) in an interior bomb bay. The X-Plane version is a fairly faithful rendition of the B25. The body consists of two sections consisting of the fuselage and a fuel tank. The main engine nacelles actually consist of two nacelles, one is the 1700 HP engine, the rear section is a 5 lb thrust rocket. Engine nacelles are also used for the two rudders in order to get the correct shape. Vertical stabilizers with rudders are buried within the nacelles. Decoration of the plane is complicated by the use of multiple engine nacelles but the resulting compromise is acceptable though not an authentic replica.
