| Olympus Mons Scenery |
|
File Description:
The Olympus Mons, located on the planet Mars, is by far the tallest volcano in the solar system, rising higher than three Mount Everests and spanning the width of the entire Hawaiian island chain. It is the largest of the major Tharsis volcanoes, rising 25 km (15.5 miles) and stretching over nearly 550 km (340 miles) east-west.

| Gusev Crater Scenery |
|
File Description:
Gusev Crater is an impact crater on Mars that looks as though a lake may have once filled it in the distant past.
Gusev Crater is about 145 km (90 miles) wide. It is located at 14.6° South latitude and 175.3° East longitude, along the boundary between Mars' southern highlands and its lowland northern plains. The crater is about 3,000 km (1,900 miles) southeast of the volcano Elysium Mons. Scientists believe the Gusev Crater was formed by the impact of an asteroid three to four billion years ago.
A valley named Ma'adim Vallis, which is connected to the south side of the crater, looks like it may have been a river channel that poured water into the crater in the past, forming a large lake. If the crater was indeed a lake, scientists expect it to contain layers of sediments as much as 915 meters (3,000 feet) thick that flowed in with the water. There may be other clues to a watery past within the crater, such as deposits of minerals, such as halite and gypsum, that form when water evaporates. Wet environments are the best places to look for life, which is why scientists are so eager to track down places on Mars that were once wet.
On the 3rd of January 2004, MER-A Spirit, one of the two Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) had landed within an 81 km by 12 km (50 by 7 miles) oval near the center of Gusev Crater. Once settled into its new "home", Spirit will begin its mission of exploring for geologic evidence of the presence of water in Gusev Crater's past.

| Firefox Mach 4 Spy Plane |
|
File Description:
"Firefox" for x-plane 6.40 is a mythical mach 4.1 spy plane, built strictly for speed, with a high lift to drag ratio of 5.9 to 6 even above mach 4. At 80000 feet it can cruise at mach 4 for 12000 nm. With a gross wt. of 71000 lb. and fuel capacity of 47000 lb. it is a flying fuel tank built strictly for reconnaissance and photography. The plane is very stable and easy to fly at all altitudes up to about 85000 feet.

| Black Cat PBY5/5A |
|
File Description:
X-Plane 6.40
The PBY Catalina is probably the best known flying boat with over 4000 produced by Consolidated aircraft and licensees. The Black Cat squadrons all done in flat black played havoc particularly for the Japanese in the Pacific in WWII. Fitted with radar, with a 15 hour endurance and 2800 mile range they hunted Japanese naval ships and bombed or torpedoed them by the hundreds. This a fairly accurate rendition of the PBY except that the retractable pontoons are missing. Why? Well basically after using all the tricks I know I ran out of parts. There are 6 engine nacelles used in the model, 2 represent the 1200 HP radial engines driving the props, the others are jets with 5 lbs of thrust, 1 is used for the rear fuselage section, 1 is used for the wing pylon, 1 is used for the flare from the fuselage to the vertical stabilizer and the last is used for the forward observation and gunner space. Two are not used. Wing sections are taken up by the main wing and the support spars so there you go. The fuel tanks are used for the side gunner pods since these can be decorated separately. The plane flies very well and is stable. Takeoffs from water are quite easy as long as you don't dip a wing tip (no floats remember). This aircraft model and the paint scheme is copyright by Robert App, January 2003. Feel free to alter the paint scheme and instrument panel as long as you give me credit for the original design. The Black Cat squadron logo used in the paint scheme is courtesy of http://www.daveswarbirds.com/blackcat/logos.htm and is from the VP-71 Black Cat squadron. E mail me with any good panels or paint schemes and I will give full credit if used.

| Thrust SSC |
|
File Description:
Thrust SCC (speed of sound car) X-Plane 6.40
Originally developed for x-plane 5, now updated to 6.40. The whole idea of this vehicle is to break the sound barrier without taking off. In 1997 the British in a Richard Noble car driven by Andy Green set a new unlimited Land Speed Record and officially broke the sound barrier on land for the first time with a record speed of 763.035 (Mach 1.0175). Two runs were made. The first was 759.333 MPH, at Mach 1.015. The all-important backup run was made within the hour, at 766.609 MPH, which is Mach 1.020. A goal that many among us had thought unattainable has been reached. And now, if you want to set a new world unlimited land speed record, you're going to have to break the sound barrier first. For more on the LSR see my web page . http://members.rogers.com/appster.. This is a take off of the British car that did the job with the help of 2 F4 Phantom jet engines. Find a flat piece of land and this car can do as much as mach 1.4 or 1.6. The trick is to get stopped before you run out of real estate.
