DEW Line Stations for Alaska, Canada And Greenland Download

File Description:
This scenery is meant to capture the essence of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line of radar and communications stations stretching from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska across the Northern shores of Alaska and Canada into Greenland. The package includes 78 of the DEWLine stations. The DEW Line served as the early warning system for North America during the years of the cold war. Many of the stations were built in the 50’s with others added in the 60’s, 70’s and into the 80’s. Most of these installations have now been closed. Many of the objects have been modeled from photographs. Where possible, site photographs were used to insure that the layouts were as representative of the sites as possible. They are, however, representations only.

Lady Franklin Point CWLF in Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Lady Franklin Point was a DEW line station on the southwest corner of Victoria Island, and then a North Warning System station until January 2000 when there was a fire. As a result there are now no NWS buildings, and no central long DEW line station building, only the outlying and already unused buildings from the DEW line site. However, the runway is still there and over 5,000 feet of gravel in length, aligned and signed 90T/270T, though on the atc it will be called 55/235 as FS9 knows nothing about the Canadian Northern Domestic Airspace. There is no runway lighting. Kugluktuk is around 80 miles to the southwest, on the mainland. I should have mentioned a long time ago that to see the apron lights working (on my fields that HAVE apron lights) requires you to have the "lights_ss_v2" by Sidney Schwartz installed.

Shepherd Bay CWSB in Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This was a DEW line Auxiliary Station on the western shore of the lower reaches of the Boothia Peninsula, 50 miles south of Taloyoak and 60 miles east of Gjoa Haven. The station was closed in 1989 but is almost intact except for a diesel tank or two. There are also other buildings nearby, and others on the beach landing area. A NWS automated station was opened in the same year as the Dew station was closed. The runway is also still there and is around 4,500 feet of gravel 100' wide, aligned 027T/207T. There are no lights, signage, or windsock, but the usual large hangar which was built at all Auxiliary Stations still survives. This is one of the more interesting DEW line stations to visit and walk around.

Simpson Lake CWSL in Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This was a DEW line I Station in the lower reaches of the Boothia Peninsula, 80 miles south of Taloyoak and 40 miles east of Shepherd Bay. The station was closed in 1963 and the buldings and other items have been removed apart from the garage and some diesel tanks. A NWS automated station was opened there in 1991. The runway is still there and is just over 3,500 feet of gravel 100' wide, aligned 044T/224T, and at 790 feet ASL. There are no lights, signage, or windsock. This is one of the less interesting DEW line stations to visit and walk around.

CYUX - Hall Beach - Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This is the Fox-Main DEW line station that I somehow omitted to include when I posted Hall Beach. It is all those large radar things in the background in the screen shot. Just install it like any scenery, just below HallBeachCYUX in the FS9 library priority.

Kavik Rivier Camp, Alaska Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Kavik airstrip is part of the "Dew Line" set up as a defensive radar line in Alaska to counter the threat of a U.S.S.R attack. Made famous by the TV series "Flying Wild Alaska" and with a population of one! Completely custom built airport and objects, and even comes with a outhouse ! If you have Ultimate Terrain Alaska installed just remove the file called "cvxKAVIC_RIVER.bgl" from your scenery folder.

Durban Island CWFB FOX-E DEW line station in Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Durban Island is 40 miles north of Cape Dyer on the southeast corner of Baffin Island, and around 60 miles southeast of Qikiqtarjuaq (known as Broughton until recently). Sitting on the top of the island is FOX-E, an intermediate station that was part of the DEW line. There is no runway (and once you have seen the island you will know why) and the station and its (usually) five man crew were supported by helicopter flights from Cape Dyer. The main feature is a 300' high mast, topped by comms gear to link both to Broughton to the north and Cape Dyer to the south. There was only one really habitable building, 80' x 30' in round figures, and this contained the generators, technical spaces, sleeping areas, kitchen, mess, and showers etc. There were also what were known as Anderson shelters, originally put up to house the construction crew and used in the summer for any maintenance people who visited for short periods. There was also a garage for a snow cat and tanks for fuel. And a view. This post also includes new bgls for Cape Dyer to provide the 300' tower there too.

Alaska State Troopers, Beechcraft Baron 58 Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
The Beechcraft Baron 58 Alaska State Troopers Repaint has several blue and red stripes going down the tail, coming to an end on the bottom of the plane. On the bottom the lines don't meet up perfectly, but its the best I can do. Just under the pilot window, there is writing saying, "ALASKA STATE TROOPERS" in very readable letters. For more information on the aircraft, or if you have an application that can convert pictures taken in FSX to .jpgs or if you just want to talk to me, email me personally at [email protected]. Or check out my YouTube videos, which include the aircraft at www.youtube.com/user/keyofawesomefan/ (I know about the username, don't ask).

No requirements except FSX, and the default aircraft, Beachcraft Baron 58. Please do not fly the aircraft outside of Alaska, as it was made for Alaska only. The inspiration came from the National Geographic show, 'Alaska State Troopers' and the fact that I was bored on a Friday afternoon. Thanks, I hope you enjoy it. Special thanks to AVSIM for reading all this stuff, I know they have to. See you in the skies!

Cape Hooper CWFH and FOX-4 DEW Line Station in Nunavut, Canada Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Cape Hooper is around 60 miles north of Kivitoo (FOX-D) and 140 miles south of Clyde River CYCY on the northeast-facing coast of Baffin Island. FOX-4 is still in use as a new and mostly-unmanned North Warning System site was established there in 1990 before the DEW line station was closed in 1991. Actually the DEW line station was not "closed" as such, they just stopped using it. The site of FOX-4 is on the top of a bump at the end of one of many long promontories that stick out into the Davis Strait between Baffin Island and Greenland, close to the far eastern end that is called Cape Hooper. There is a gravel runway to the west, down at 65' ASL; it is only just over 3,000' long and most material was delivered by sea to the beach at the southern end of the runway. The runway is signed as "324T - 144T" as this is Northern Domestic Airspace where all runways are signed "true" and not "magnetic"; it is 013/193 magnetic with a huge magnetic variation of 48.9 degrees in this area where the magnetic field is mostly vertical, and so useless for navigation.

Alaska North Slope 4: Lonely Air Force Station (AK71) Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
The town of Barrow is in the far north of Alaska, and these are coastal villages or radar installations to the west, south, and now east of Barrow. There will be further additions. Lonely Air Force Station AK71 is 80 miles east of Barrow and on the coast. It was, and at first sight appears still to be, a DEW station until you are close enough to see that the gravel apron is deteriorating. There is a gravel runway around 5,000 feet long, a large hangar, the DEW buildings, radar under the domes, the remains of huge line-of-sight communications reflectors, and oil tanks. Some DEW sites are not worth a visit; others are surprisingly intact and this is one of those. The AI takes place three days a week and is a C130, in which case the DEW site is still functioning or under mothball maintenance, a chartered Reeve Aleutian in which case the site is closed and they are documenting wildlife, and a Cessna with a group of the curious.
