| Unalakleet PAUN modification in Alaska |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
This version of Unalakleet PAUN is a modification of the scenery made by Sid and Pete way back in 2011, posted with Sid's knowledge and ok. There is a dearth of photographic information available on PAUN and it was only recently that there was enough so that hangars could be properly made and also properly situated. Which is why I made this now with a new ERA hangar, a new beige hangar rotated 90 degrees, next to it a blue hangar, plus fuel tanks, signage, and updated AI to include ERA planes, a NAC B737 and a NAC DC6B. Unalakleet has a population approaching 700, and lives by the income earned from the harvest from the sea and the river. There is no road within hundreds of miles and the only way to get food or anything else delivered is by ship (but only in the ice-free summer months) or through the airport.

| Shaktoolik 2C7 in Alaska |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Shaktoolik is a coastal village 35 miles north of Unalakleet, with a fishing population of around 250. It was originally established inland on the Shaktoolik River but moved to the coast in 1933. Due to storms and erosion it was again moved in 1967, to its current location 2 miles further north. Confusingly, what is called "New Shaktoolik 38A" was in fact only "new" in 1967 and has since been replaced by "Shaktoolik 2C7" further north, built on wider land with a longer gravel runway of 4,000 feet. 38A is still visible but unusable, with the sheds being used for other purposes. There are flights from Unalakleet, included in the AI here as a further modification to the Bethel PABE AI. A note here about my scenery making. This is post number 500 and there will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I either took or found for scenery purposes. There is a limit to what can be located online and I have already been making use of the little there is; eg Unalakleet. So, if you are near an airport (preferably Canadian or Alaskan) and have a camera..... Let me know.

| St Michael Island in Alaska-St Michael 5S8 and Stebbins WBB |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
St Michael Island is 50 miles southwest of Unalakleet, an island that in fact appears to be a cape and a firmly attached piece of the mainland. On the island there are two villages, St Michael on the northeast corner and Stebbins on the northwest. St Michael has a new airfield that is west of the village by around a mile or so, with a gravel runway 4,000 feet long. The old and now closed airport was known as SMK, and is now readily identifiable by the new red-roofed school building that occupies the centre of the runway. The new airfield now has an icao code of PAMK, but FS9 does not readily accept icao code changes so we are stuck with the original code it was given, 5S8. The SMK icao of the old airport will still show on your gps as if I deleted it the runway would also have to be deleted, and a substitute and unsatisfactory gravel apron made to impersonate a runway. Stebbins is 5 miles west of St Michael and next to the shore, a smaller village than St Michael with around 250 inhabitants. The airfield is at the southern end of the village and has a gravel runway that is 3,000 feet long. The icao code is WBB. There is no AI included here as it was already included in the post of Shaktoolik. There is a correction here for Shaktoolik, which I now find should have had a blue garage, not a red one; I wrongly named a photo. A note here about my scenery making. This is post number 501 and there will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I took or found for scenery purposes. There is a limit to what can be located online and I have already been making use of the little there is; eg Unalakleet. So, if you are near an airfield (preferably Canadian or Alaskan) and have a camera..... Let me know.

| Elim ELI and Moses Point MOS in Alaska |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Elim is a coastal village 90 miles east of Nome, living from fishing and with a population of around 330. The airfield has a gravel runway 3,000 feet long. The majority of flights to and from the airfield originate in Nome, but there are also others to and from nearby fields such as Golovin, Unalakleet, Shaktoolik, and Koyuk. A further 7 miles or so east of Elim is another field called Moses Point MOS, which is included here and was an Army Airforce field before being transferred to the private ownership of the Elim Native Corporation. Until Elim ELI was established (date unknown, but after 1988) this served the village of Elim and although the runway is now unlit and not in very good condition (translate that as "full of potholes") it is stated that the longer runway can still be used if Elim is not adequate. However, the note is undated and there are no details of how often it is used or even if it is actually still currently in use. There is one hangar still in existence; all the rest has been demolished and (mostly) removed. A note here about my scenery making. This is post number 502 and there will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I either took or found for scenery purposes. | Golovin N93 and Solomon AK26 in Alaska |
|
Images related to this file:
File Description:
Golovin is a coastal fishing village 70 miles east of Nome and around 20 miles west of Elim, with a population of under 200. The village is a check point on the Iditarod race and the name originates from a Russian admiral in the far distant past. The airfield has a gravel runway which is over 4,000 feet long; the older runway amid the village housing is still visible but not usable. The majority of flights to and from the airfield originate in Nome, but there are also others to and from nearby fields such as Elim, Unalakleet, Shaktoolik, and Koyuk. The AI includes a daily ERA flight. Most flights to villages of this size are in fact not "scheduled", but are "air taxi" being used by three or four villagers to go supermarket shopping in a larger neighbouring town, which in this case is Nome. In many cases the numbers of flights to and from a village in a year average out to one a day. There is a further scenery included here, which is Solomon AK26. Solomon is around 40 miles west of Golovin and from 1898 was suppporting a gold mining operation on the Fish and Niukluk rivers further inland at Council. Solomon, and the airfield which obviously came later, gradually faded from use in competition with Nome, leaving almost nothing behind at Solomon by the 1980's except a gravel runway and the nearby Solomon roadhouse. There are other buildings near the airfield which appear to be new and in good condition, but their function is unknown to me. The Solomon terrain modifications and grass deletion bgl's did not function until loaded in a "Top" folder; this is unusual, and may be required only in my FS9 setup or in all situations. I have no way of knowing as I can only design for my situation. A note here about my scenery making. This is post number 503 and there will not be many more to follow this as I am almost at the end of the photos I either took or found for scenery purposes. There is a limit to what can be located online and I have already been making use of the little there is; eg Unalakleet. Post 520 is unlikely.
