North American P-51D 3rd ACG (C) 'Bad Angel' Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This folder contains a second repaint for the A2A WoP3 P-51D Mustang, in the colors of P-51D-20 44-63272 “Bad Angel”, flown by Lt. Louis Curdes of the 4th Fighter Squadron, 3rd Air Commando Group. He is one of a very few American pilots to have kills against each of the three major Axis powers, and I believe the only US pilot to display an American flag among his victory markings. While serving in the MTO, Curdes downed several Fw-190’s, and one of the Macchi C.202’s he downed is now on display at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC. He was shot down over Italy and spent a short time as a POW before escaping. Because he was an escaped POW, he couldn’t fly again against the Germans for security reasons. He was transferred to the PTO, and on February 10, 1945, during a sweep to Bataan Island, he saw a P-51 pilot parachute into the sea. Curdes circled around him to pinpoint his position to rescuers. While circling, he saw a USAAF C-47 that was preparing to land on the Japanese-held strip on Batan. The C-47 crew didn’t respond to repeated attempts at radio contact and, unable to shepherd the C-47 to safety, Curdes saw only two possibilities – first that it was a Japanese plane bearing false US markings (the DC-3 having been built under licence in Japan prior to the war), or it was a US plane whose crew was unaware the field had fallen to the Japanese. He therefore carefully shot out both engines, causing the plane to land in the sea. All 13 people on board the C-47 were rescued – and they were indeed Americans, including a nurse Curdes had previously dated. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom.

The next day, the aircraft made an emergency landing, while being flown by another pilot and was damaged. McKennon received a 4th Ridge Runner after his return from hospital, while this aircraft was repaired and continued flying with the 4th FG as WD-I. More on Maj. North American P-51D 364th FG (5E-V) 'Estrellita' Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This folder contains a repaint for the A2A WoP3 P-51D Mustang, in the colors of P-51K #44-64077 5E-V "Estellita" of Lt. Curtis L. Smart, of the 385th FS/364th FG, based in Honington, UK. As the story goes, just prior to being assigned to England to fly fighter aircraft, Lt. Smart’s wife gave birth to the first of three daughters. Estrellita was the title of a Mexican song that was popular in those days, which translated to “Little Star”, and this was given to the child as her name. Smart’s first P-51 was named Estrellita but the aircraft was lost, so too was the second and ultimately he received the third aircraft to bear the name, now Estrellita III. The nose art was never completed as intended. If you notice the odd extension to the bottom of the “E”, this was supposed to be a shooting star with a classic early US star with red center forming the shooting star portion. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom, based on the A2A paintkit.

North American P-51D 479th FG (J2-K) 'My Pride and Joy' Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This folder contains a second repaint for the A2A WoP3 P-51D Mustang, in the colors of #44-11755 J2-K "my Pride 'n Joy", which was flown by Lt. Richard Gomez Candelaria of the 435th Fighter Squadron/479th FG. With six aerial victories to his credit, Candelaria was the only pilot in his squadron to make "ace". Most of his victories were achieved on a single mission on April 7, 1945, when he found himself the lone escort protecting a formation of USAAF B-24 Liberators. Candelaria defended the bombers from at least 15 German fighters, single-handedly destroying four before help arrived. He was also credited with a probable victory on an Me 262 during this engagement. Six days later, Candelaria was shot down by ground fire, and spent the rest of the war as a POW. After the war, Candelaria served in the Air National Guard, reaching the rank of Colonel prior to his retirement. His april 7 mission was shown in an episode of "dogfights", which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC_yVzUeIUI Repaint by Jan Kees Blom, based on the A2A paintkit.

North American P-51D 20th FG (LC-N) 'June Nite' Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This folder contains a repaint for the A2A WoP3 P-51D Mustang (with AccuSim), in the colors of P-51K 44-11161 LC-N "June Nite" as flown by Ernest "Feeb" Fiebelkorn of the 20th FG. He was one of the biggest aces of the 8th Air Force, meaning tallest and heaviest. 6ft 4in combined with 225 pounds must have made a placement into the Mustang's cockpit a bit problematic. This did not prevent Feeb from becoming the top-scoring pilot of the 20th Fighter Group. Moreover, it was not Fiebelkorn's only claim to fame. On November 8th 1944 he and Edward Haydon from 357th FG managed to shoot down German Me 262 piloted by then top-scoring ace of the World - Walter Nowotny. The famous Austrian pilot was not lucky enough to survive that onslaught. Feeb finished the war unscathed only to die in F-82 over Korea. His total score includes 8 individual aerial victories, 2 shared aerial victories and 2 individual ground victories. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom, based on the A2A paintkit.
