RAF Bradwell Bay Download

File Description:
RAF Bradwell Bay is a former Royal Air Force station located 9.5 miles (15.3 km) east of Maldon, Essex, England and 3.1 miles (5.0 km) south west of West Mersea, Essex. The airfield was first used as grass landing strip for the nearby firing ranges before being turned into a RAF station with concrete runways and hangars. The station is unique as it was the only fighter station where the Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO) was used. Part of the site is currently being used by the Bradwell nuclear power station. Several of the hangars are still used as storage by the local farmers and the control tower is now a private house. Agricultural buildings, built in the '70s and '80s on runways one and two, are now home to several local businesses. RNAS Twatt (HMS Tern) Download

File Description:
Opened on the 1 April 1941 RNAS (HMS Tern) was used throughout the second world war by various Sqns of the Royal Navy undergoing training. The station had 4 concrete runways with various hangers and the usual building associated with a military base. It was also the first unit in the UK to experience a helicopter crash when a Sikorsky helicopter getting ready for take off; hit a parked Blenheim. The UK and Iceland where involved in what was called the cod wars in the early 1970s, and NATO was concerned that it would have to remove its bases from Iceland should the dispute escalate between the 2 countries and there was talk of Twatt becoming a NATO base. However, this did not happen and the idea was dropped. There was also talk of the unit becoming a base for helicopters supporting the oil industry, however, as a result of the drop in oil prices during the 80s that idea was also dropped. Most of the airfield has been returned to farming now with only the unique Control Tower and a handful of other building remaining. NB: For more detailed history of this unit go to:- https://canmore.org.uk/site/81752/twatt-airfield

RAF Winthorpe Download

File Description:
RAF Winthorpe opened in September 1940 and was used as a satellite for RAF Swinderby. It had a long and varied career, mainly as a Heavy Conversion unit. I am not going into too much history here as an in-depth history can be viewed on the very good Newark Air Museum site www.newarkairmuseum.org The runways, peri track and hangars are pretty much as was; As are the vast majority of the buildings, however, I cannot guarantee that the building used are 100% the correct type of building or in the actual place on the airfield, although I have done my best. (Much of the map I had was out of focus and the building listings were not complete. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my version of RAF Winthorpe.

RAF Tholthorpe Download

File Description:
RAF Tholthorpe opened in the late 1930s as a grass airfield, and operated as a sub-station of RAF Linton-on-Ouse. From August 1940 to December 1940, Tholthorpe was a landing field for Whitley bombers of No. 58 Squadron RAF and No. 51 Squadron RAF based at Linton. From January 1941 to June 1943, Tholthorpe underwent maintenance to upgrade to Class A standards, with three intersecting concrete runways. RAF Tholthorpe was assigned to No. 6 Group RCAF in June 1943. RCAF squadrons stationed here included No. 434 Squadron "Bluenose", 431 Squadron "Iroquois", 420 Squadron "Snowy Owl", and 425 Squadron "Alouette". No. 434 Squadron, flying Halifax bombers, was formed and headquartered at Tholthorpe airfield from June 1943 until the squadron was moved to Croft. In July 1943, 431 Squadron moved to Tholthorpe airfield from Burn. It was later moved to Croft airfield as well. Not only were the operational squadrons quartered here, also their service echelons, - respectively Nos. 9431 and 9434 Service Echelon - which were formed from the ground crew of nos. 431 and 434 Squadron on 3 November 1943 and who moved with their squadrons on to Croft in December 1943. In December 1943 No. 420 and No. 425 Squadrons (together with their service echelons, nos. 9420 and 9425 Service Echelon were moved to Tholthorpe airfield from Dalton and Dishforth respectively. These squadrons had returned from service with Wellingtons in North Africa, and it took them several weeks to work up on the newly acquired Halifax bombers. They were therefore unable to fly their first raids from Tholthorpe until mid-February 1944. No. 420 Squadron flew 160 operations from Tholthorpe airfield and lost 25 Halifax’s. No. 425 squadron flew 162 operations from Tholthorpe airfield and lost 28 Halifax’s. In all, 119 Halifax bombers were lost from Tholthorpe. In April and May 1945 nos. 420 and 425 Squadron converted to Avro Lancaster’s, which they took with them when they left for RCAF Debert, Nova Scotia, Canada in June 1945. The station closed in June 1945.

RAF Predannack Download

File Description:
RAF Predannack was opened in May 1941 as a satellite for RAF Portraits. Accommodation was dispersed over a wide area, with officers accommodated in the Mullion Cove and Polurian Hotels. The number of personnel reached peak strength of 3,600 by 1944. The first squadron to arrive was 247 Squadron with Hawker Hurricanes, specialising in night defence of the South West's towns and ports. The night fighting element was later augmented by 1457 Flight flying Douglas Havocs with its unsuccessful Turbinlite searchlight tactics. However, the arrival of 600 Squadron with radar equipped Bristol Beaufighters produced better results. GCI (Ground Control Interception) in the area was covered by RAF Treleaver radar station. A more detailed history can be found on Wikipedia.
