File Description: The original XC-69 Prototype "The Beast" was purchased from Howard Hughes for $100,000 in 1950. Lengthened by 18ft 7 Inches, it became the prototype L-1049. Dressed up in special duds, the first flight occurred on 13 October 1950, and the rest is history. With a slightly different paint scheme, this aircraft was used by Lockheed as a test bed for future models, including the PO-2W / WV2.
