File Description:
Unlimited Racer x-plane v 6.7 - Check out my piston engine prop driven unlimited class racer in custom designs at http://www.x-plane.org which just won the run off. The plane is powered by two Rolls Royce "Crecy" engines (5000 HP each), only 6 I believe were produced with serial numbers (2,4,6,8,10 & 12) before the program was cancelled due to progress with the turboprop. Anyway the prop driven plane will do 755 mph at 2500 ft (mach 0.9999) in level flight. Between 25000 and 30000 ft it will go though mach 1 while climbing at 1000 ft/sec and tops out at mach 1.14 in level flight at 36000 ft (v6.7). Probably will go faster at higher altitudes. This is definitely not your mass produced aircraft but I firmly believe that it is technically possible to go through the sound barrier with props. With thinner airfoils (the contest limited airfoils to those with min. drag coeff of 0.005) this plane could go faster. Sounds like "####" flies like a jet. The trick obviously is to forget the conventional wisdom that the prop tip speed should not exceed mach 1.0. Check out the prop airfoils by the way. Oh and watch the prop wash taking off, it can be a handfull. In version 7.1 its actually slightly faster. If flying in version 7 you must drop the weapons (engines, pilot and fuel tanks) to get top speed.
