Haines Junction CYHT in Yukon Territory Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Haines Junction is a village in the Yukon Territory, Canada, amid the Rocky Mountains and around 80 miles west of Whitehorse. It is sited at the junction of the Haines Highway and the Alaska Highway, hence the name. The village was established in 1942 when the Alaska Highway was under construction, and the Haines Highway was built over the Chilkat Pass to connect to the town of Haines on the Alaska coast. The date of this scenery is, as usual, around 2010. At that time there was a regular service (not always a daily one, depending on the time of year) by Yukon Air North, and in this case it is by an ATR 42-300. There is a helicopter company based at the airfield, Trans North Helicopters, and there is also Kluane Glacier Air Tours, which, as the name suggests, takes you to a glacier so you can stroll around on ice. And then brings you back. The gravel runway is 5,000 feet long and aligned 04-22, and is lit, with PAPI at both ends. Right hand circuits are required for runway 04 as the terrain is not flat. This post will be followed by two other airfields to the northwest, Silver City and Burwash, both of which are on or close to the Alaska Highway.

Cordova Smith PACV & Municipal CKU in Alaska US ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Cordova is on the south coast of Alaska, around 150 miles east of Anchorage and 45 miles south of Valdez. The town is mainly built on a small but relatively flat area between the east side of Prince William Sound and Eyak Lake, and has a population of around 2,350 in 2010, the approximate date of this scenery. The Municipal Airfield CKU is on the north side of Eyak Lake to the east of Cordova, with the runway that is 1,800 feet of unlit gravel squeezed between the lake and the road that runs around the lake. The hangars and parking aprons are reached by taxiing across, and to some extent along, the road. Float planes are also taken from the lake to an apron to the west of the runway. Cordova Airport PACV (named in the real world "Merle K. (Mudhole) Smith", and I will leave you to research this) is known as Cordova Smith in FS9 and is 10 miles to the east of the town on relatively flat ground between mountains to the north and the sea to the south. The runway is 8,080 feet of lit asphalt aligned 09-27 with ILS on runway 27 and VASI on both ends. The aprons are to the north side of the runway and are reached by back-taxiing; there are no taxiways parallel to the runway. The main apron serves Alaska Air via the western of two taxiways. The GA parking and hangars are mainly reached by using the eastern taxiway, though there is in fact a connecting taxiway between the two (for GA, but definitely not for airliner use). The taxiway further to the west serves the separated Alaska Coastguard apron and hangar, which is mainly for helicopter use. There is a nominally grass runway 1,900 feet long and aligned 16-34 to the south of the main runway; in fact it appears to be more gravel than grass. I have left this inactive as otherwise AI Alaska Air planes would be attempting to use this when the wind made it seem like a good idea. The AI includes Alaska Air (twice a day) and also Coastguard helicopters, along with GA.

Grande Cache CEQ5 in Alberta, Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Grande Cache is at 4,117 feet above sea level, just under 90 miles south of Grande Prairie and 220 miles west of Edmonton. It is among the eastern foothills of the Rockies. The town was established to accommodate employees of a coal mine and their families in the early 1970's. There was a financial roller coaster ride for the coalmine during the next few years and despite the opening of a wood chip plant and a federal prison the town was eventually downgraded to a hamlet by a vote in 2018, as it was essentially bankrupt and had a population of less than 4,500. The airport, some 10 miles east of the town, had two aprons, one for GA and scheduled flights and another, the eastern one, for fire fighting planes. I say "had" as it was closed in January 2017. However, the fire fighting area appears to have been maintained (tanks repainted, for instance) and is presumably able to support operations if required. The date for this scenery is 2009.

Mackenzie River close to Tulita CZFN in Northwest Territories Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
I discovered, while testing another airfield near the Mackenzie River, that along the side of the Mackenzie adjacent to Tulita, and for a considerable distance, there was a cliff of water. I have no idea if my version of Ultimate Terrain has developed a fault or if this has been caused by the installation of a terrain mesh that now argues with UT for some unknown reason. Whatever, it was impossible to leave it as it was. I have included a screenshot of the cliff further upstream. To avoid the cliff of water I have flattened that area of the Mackenzie River and the adjacent river banks and both the town and the airfield to a height above sea level of 400 feet. This does not reflect the real life situation but is the lesser of two optical evils. I have included a screenshot of the flattened area. If you do not have a problem then you do not need this. If you too have a cliff of water then you might want to try this. It does not completely get rid of the problem, but it does get rid of it in the area visible when landing or taking off at Tulita.

Schefferville CYKL & Squaw Lake CSZ9 in Quebec Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Schefferville is a town in an area of Quebec that is surrounded by Labrador, the border taking an unusual wriggly course instead of the normal Canadian straight line. One has to presume that there was a lot of political negotiation involved. Take a look at Google Earth to see what I mean. The town was established in 1954 (initially at a site a bit north of the present location, and with a different name) to support newly established iron ore mining. To assist with the exploration for further iron ore and the construction of the railway it seems that there was a forced relocation of native population. Although iron ore mining around Schefferville in its current location flourished through the late 1960's these relocated folk were neglected and suffered "destitute poverty". Through the 1970's iron ore mining declined and ceased in Schefferville in 1982, when most of the 4,000 or so non-native residents left. Since the year 2000 there have been moves to reopen mining in the area and production restarted in 2011, the approximate date of this scenery. The main reason why iron ore mining started again in Schefferville as opposed to any other area in Quebec or Labrador is the existing railway, used for ore transportation. There is no road connection and the airport is the only other means of access for the 250(?) town inhabitants. This population figure is somewhat of a guess, and the town inhabitants are largely company officers who change and move in and out as required by their work. Schefferville airport is to the east of the town. It has a single lit asphalt runway that is aligned 18-36 and is 4,975 feet long and 150 feet wide, with PAPI at both ends. Air Inuit flights connect with Kuujjuaq to the north and Sept-Isles to the south with onward connections to all parts of Canada. There are other charter flights for company personnel. The terminal building has been renovated and the photos show just how dilapidated it had become before this was done. I like it. This scenery also includes Squaw Lake, a float base that is used by Air Saguenay. Or was, as the company was closed in 2019 after an accident involving several deaths. The reason for Air Saguenay establishing a float base here was, once again, the railway, which allowed people to reach Schefferville for a reasonable cost. They could then use the float planes for a shorter distance and reasonable price to reach fishing lodges on the lakes to the north. Colville Lake CEB3 in Northwest Territories Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Colville Lake is a small village of around 150 Dene, located to the northwest of the Great Bear Lake and east of the Mackenzie River, 120 miles north of Norman Wells. The village and the airfield are next to each other and to the lake shore. I recently discovered which of the standard terminal buildings had been used there and this, along with information I already had, enabled me to now make the scenery, which is based on an approximate 2010 date. The gravel runway is lit and around 2,800 feet long, aligned 10-28. North Wright Air serves the village from it's headquarters at Norman Wells with daily flights by de Havilland Twin Otters, or "twotters" as they were quickly named among the northern Canadian airline personnel when they were first produced. The approximate time of this scenery is 2010. While testing this scenery I discovered that Tulita (previously called Fort Norman) which is another Mackenzie River airfield to the south of Norman Wells, needs to be reposted due to a terrain fault. If you find an error here then email me please, and note that my email address has been changed to rogwens at Gmail dot com.

Anticosti Island in Quebec Canada ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
Anticosti Island is in the Gulf of St Lawrence, around 25 miles off the Quebec mainland coast. It is some 40 miles wide and 130 miles long on an east west axis. There are few urban areas and only one that can be described as a small town, namely Port Menier at the western end of the southern coast, with a population of under 1,000. There is a ferry service to the harbour. The airport, Port Menier CYPN, is around 3 miles northeast of the town, with an asphalt runway aligned 11-28, 4,875 feet long and 150 feet wide with PAPI at each end. In 2010 (the approximate date of this scenery) a gravel runway was still visible at the eastern end of the field. This was no longer in use by 2010, except perhaps by small planes on skis in the winter. The island, with its small population, small urban area, and no industry other than logging, has as a result a mainly undisturbed wildlife population. This has made deer hunting and fishing the main tourist activities, with one company (called Safari) having an exclusive licence to exploit large areas of mountains and rivers. Planeloads of hunters and fishermen are flown in on chartered Nolinor Aviation planes from the south. There are a further two airfields in the eastern end of the island, and in 2010 Rivere-Aux-Saumons CTH7 had a 5,500 feet gravel runway, linked by road to a lodge area at the mouth of the river. This is the only lodge area that I have been able to locate, but there are others. To the south Riviere Bell CRB5 had at that time a gravel runway that was 3,000 feet long. This has been lengthened since then and both runways were recently (2021) asphalted. If you find an error email me please, and note that my email address has been changed to rogwens at Gmail dot com.

Bethel Terminal Building correction ZipDive!  Download

Images related to this file:

File Description:
This is the correct substitute terminal building for Bethel PABE. Somehow, and I cannot now remember how it could possibly have happened, the wrong terminal building was included with the posting of an updated version of Bethel. I wrote at the time that the actual Bethel terminal building could not be made as it was too complicated to be made with the little information that was available. I then modified the Alaska terminal building from a previous scenery at Nome and included it in the Bethel scenery, as shown in the screenshots that were included with the posting of Bethel. But, somehow, the terminal from Barrow was wrongly included in the posting that is currently available. If you have the wrong terminal building (see the "wrong" screenshot) then substitute the attached bgl's for your existing ones and get the "correct" terminal as shown in the pic here.

Elk Island Lodge CKZ3 in Manitoba Canada missing parked plane ZipDive!  Download

File Description:
This is the parked plane bgl and texture that I was informed are missing from the Elk Island CKZ3 post, if you installed it as a stand-alone scenery. Apologies. INSTALLATION: To install unzip to a temporary folder, then: 1) Add the contents of the scenery folder to the Elk Island CKZ3/scenery folder. 2) Add the contents of the texture folder to the Elk Island CKZ3/texture folder. NOTE: DO NOT take the plane textures out of the folder they are in. Add the FOLDER as it is to the Elk Island Lodge CKZ3/texture folder. I just know someone will get it wrong and then ask me why.
